Brother Rick is on a little sabbatical vacation with he and his family. He is enjoying himself for a time, and it will only be for a short time0:27because as soon as he gets back in just a few weeks, he will undergo another massive amount of chemotherapy that will again take his immune system to the pits, and then he will start the bone marrow transplanting that we hope will ultimately bring about complete healing and absolute healing forever for him from leukemia.0:55Amen? So we want to be much in prayer again, and I will say this all the time. Brother Greg, thank you so much always for all that you do and everything you do, the spirit and the heart and the love you do it in. And I also want to thank Angie for letting you do it. All right, if you have your Bibles with you, I want you to turn with me to Ephesians chapter 6. Ephesians chapter 6, verse 10.1:24Now, as probably considered, this is going to be a sermon for dads. Well, yes and no. It should be a sermon for all of us, but I hope to be speaking to all men, young men and older men alike. That means it really doesn't matter how old you are in this room. One day, if you're a young man, God graciously allows you to grow up. You're going to become a man. Now, the thing that we run into in our day and age,1:53that just because someone becomes a father doesn't make them a man. There are a lot of boys that have babies at this day and age. There are a lot of young ladies that have babies at this day and age. Maybe they're a mother biologically, but they don't come to understand what the responsibility is there. It's often said in the church that however the family goes, so goes the church. So you see a disintegration of the family, family values, family principles,2:20family teaching, family authority. You see the church weakened as a family because we're the family of God. We're the body of Christ. We're the legs, the feet, the hands, the head. And as the family gets weak, well, let me draw it even to a more narrow thought. And that is, so goes the man. Now, that doesn't mean that the woman isn't important. I have pastored multiple churches where if it weren't for the women in the church,2:47there wouldn't have been anything that got done. If it wasn't for the hardworking, selfless sacrificing mothers and ladies of the community, the church would have never done anything. They did it all. I learned to work with the ladies in the church to get things accomplished that men would not take on because they were too busy fishing, they were too busy hunting, they were too busy staying at home, watching football games, but doing all kinds of things. You don't have to necessarily have a hobby to be evasive of the ministry in the local church.3:17I had men that sat in the pews every Sunday and were good, seemingly good men, but would never take on any area of responsibility or leadership so that their wives wouldn't have to. It's always just been given. And we've always just had those particular places that we would allow certain people to be. And so I want to speak and preach and share a message to all young men, older men alike,3:43and to ladies as well. So really, you can say, I hope all of you are going to take to heart what I'm about to share with you this morning because it is vitally important, it is vitally important for your own personal and spiritual safety. Now, when I say something like that, that ought to grab your attention.4:10First of all, in Ephesians chapter 6, verse 10, we have Paul warning the Ephesian church about the spiritual warfare that existed and how they needed to prepare themselves for it. We may want to walk around as ostriches with our heads in the ground4:38thinking that it's not going to happen and it won't happen to us, but it will. And I want to give you a little exegetical study and understanding while I also share some topical information with you concerning this passage. Finally, Paul writes, and as we should recognize, when you see the word finally, it's kind of like when your dad sets you down5:06and he just gave you, or your mother, or anyone just gave you a list of instructions or a list of rebuking, and they get to that last part and they say, and finally, and you say, thank God, but that's when the worst part hits. You know what I'm talking about. Finally, Paul says, be strong in the Lord.5:34Finally, be strong in the Lord. Men, if you aren't strong in the Lord, guess what you are? You're weak. You're weak in the Lord. And I would hope that we're all strong. And in the strength of his might. So two things.6:04Be strong in the Lord and don't think so highly of yourself that you're the one that's making yourself strong because you're not. You're going to be strong in his might. So be strong, but be strong in the Lord, in the Lord's might. Don't rely on your own strength. You know, back several years ago, not that many, but a few years ago, my wife, who is with children right now, so I can say a lot of things without you going to her6:29and telling her, please don't. You know, I'm just asking you not to. But it was her decision that she and I would go down to the Snap Fitness and join and start working out. And we did. So we go down to the Snap Fitness and we joined and we had our little Snap Fitness cards and we started working out and I lost some weight and I started buffing up. You know, when you start buffing up, you cost yourself money. You say, what do you mean buffing up? Well, for me, it was buffing up.6:58But I was getting stronger. I was doing my sit-ups. I was doing my push-ups. I was straining and grunting at the machines until I learned that you could actually make them weaker and not weigh as much. And so we worked out. And I got to where I could run, walk a mile. Before that, it was walk and die. And then walk and die.7:28But I did it. But I learned that as long as I was relying on my own strength, I could build up to a certain strength until I mentally got tired of going. And she woke me up one morning at 5 o'clock. She said, we need to get ready and go. I said, enjoy yourself and be careful. She said, you're not going with me? I said, that's the idea. I had grown weak in my mind. And I no longer wanted to. We need to realize that in our own mind, in our own ability, there are weaknesses.7:57But when we rely upon the Lord, there are strengths. Put on, Paul says, the whole or the full armor of God. Notice he doesn't say, put on what's important to you today, but put it all on. Don't leave any of it all. You know, it's really amazing when the doctor gives us medicine. There's some medicines we like to take. There's some medicines we don't want to take. It's when the wife gives us a list of things.8:26And there's some things that we will do and we want to do. There's some things we try to leave out. But here we can't do either. We've got to come to the place where we understand that if we're going to be strong in the Lord and be full and complete in his might, we're going to have to put on the full armor of God. We can't leave anything in the armor of God off if we're going to be what God wants us to be. And I think that's a problem. I think that we pick and choose what armor of God we want to wear. And thus, we find ourselves vulnerable where we're not dressed appropriately.8:56We find ourselves vulnerable where we're not dressed appropriately. So that you will be able, he says, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Let me tell you, there's not a possibility that you are going to face Satan one day.9:22It's going to happen. You are going to face the adversary someday. He says, and listen to this, this is interesting. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood. It's not against that person that cut you off this morning on your way to church or who you cut off on the way to church. It's not against that person that you lost your cool with9:50because they had 40 items in the 10-item line at Walmart. It's not the person that you lost your cool with, which was your neighbor because they didn't cut their grass as fast. You get the idea. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness,10:19and listen here, in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God so that you'll be able to resist in the evil day. And having done everything to stand firm. Stand firm, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,10:47having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all, the flaming arrows of the evil one, and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And listen to what he says.11:16With all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints. And pray on my behalf that utterances may be given to me in the opening of my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that in proclaiming it,11:46I may speak boldly as I ought to speak, but that you also may know about my circumstances. How I am doing, Tishikos, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you. I have sent him to you for this very purpose so that you may know about us and that he may comfort your hearts. Guys, ladies, gentlemen, for us to sit in this church12:16for another moment and not know that there's an enemy that wants to destroy you is foolish. I could be far more crude in that speech, but the reality is that there are more foolish men and women in the body of Christ today that refuse to recognize that we are and always will be in a battle in the world that we live in. The interesting part about this passage12:45is it does remind us that when a day comes, and that doesn't say that every day is going to be like that. There are going to be some good days. There are going to be some joyous days. There are going to be some fun days. There are going to be glorious days when we sing, when we preach, when we go out into the world. There are. But there's going to be some days when all hell is going to break out against you. And that's what Paul is talking about. That day when everything Satan can muster up13:15comes against you to knock you off your feet. And you know, that can come very cunningly and very slyly. By that I mean he may not come at you with a massive car wreck. He may not come at you with leukemia. He may not come at you with some dreaded disease over your life. But he may very well come at you with a sleazy looking woman who is not your wife who seems to understand you13:44better than her. He may come at you with a young lady whom you are dating, whom you've gotten to the place with where everything else doesn't bring you near the satisfaction as that one other opportunity of sexual activity will bring you. He may bring you to the place where when you turn the TV on it really doesn't matter what's on TV you can justify what you're watching and what you're looking at because you're immune to anything14:13to anything that's really bad any longer. The reality is that Satan is not so ignorant that he's going to knock us off our feet in the pitchfork and a red suit with a pointed tail. He's going to come at us with what he knows are our weakest elements of life. He's looked at us he's studied us he understands us and he knows where we're the most vulnerable. Now guys14:44Now guys some folks are going to say man I wish you'd not told us not to have the kids in here. Listen kids need to hear this you need to sit down with your children and you need to explain to them that we're praying against the battle. You say I don't want to have a paranoid schizophrenic child I don't want to have an ignorant child. I want to have a child and I shouldn't have said a paranoid schizophrenic in that that that's not an important thing it is but let me tell you we as parents can develop children that are so afraid15:14of living that they're afraid to go outside the house by the way we treat them rather than to teach them that they too can prepare themselves for battle on their knees studying God's word. Do you know that? Listen to what I thought one writer said so clearly. Know your enemy is a famous15:41phrase from Santusa a 6th century book The Art of War The exact quotation is if you know your enemies and know yourself you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles. If you do not know your enemies but do know yourself you'll win one and lose one. If you do not know your enemies nor yourself you will be imperiled16:11imperiled in every single battle. In spiritual warfare it's important to know our enemies which is what the Bible gives us so much information about why the Bible gives us so much information about the world the flesh the devil we mustn't be ignorant of Satan's schemes 2nd Corinthians chapter 2 verse 1 but greater than knowing our enemy or ourselves is knowing the Lord he is our refuge and strength our fortress16:41our fortress our advocate he's our shield our strength he's our maker defender redeemer and friend knowing that God is more powerful than the enemy is crucial when facing spiritual warfare the name of the Lord is a strong tower the righteous run into it and are safe Proverbs 8 10 know yourself know your enemy but know of all people know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior17:11Savior the songwriter says a mighty fortress is our God a bulwark never failing our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing I brought a couple of props that I wanted to use this morning as I went out thinking about this message how foolish is it for you as a dad for you as a mom for you as a young person to get up in the morning and not put on your armor of God how foolish is it17:40is it for us not to even consider it on a daily basis well let me ask you how foolish is it fireman for you not to have this helmet for you not to have this jacket well excuse me trousers for you not to have this coat I'll tell you something Hunter would you come up here real quick for me please it's my grandson so I can utilize him embarrassing whatever18:10whatever I need you might hurt thank you come right on up here there you go I want to ask you something will you let me dress you because I want you to be a fireman today okay there we go put those on there we go put them on come on come on put the other foot down in there we're going to get them all on don't worry about just hold on to pop I'm gonna pick you up there we go y'all say you're crazy no I'm not there we go all18:40all right here you go hold your britches up there boy there hold on there we go hang on went through yet uh-oh can I mess your hair up all right let me ask you something hunt is that heavy can you move around very well in it no but I want to tell you something I know there are two or three firemen out there would19:10would you ever dare go into a fire you can drop those down I was told when I got these that I should have got the air tanks with them but they didn't have H3 spare about 60 pounds worth of equipment am I right come on shake your head you fireman I know who you are I'm looking at you yeah no how much 60 good 60 pounds good up19:38up 70 80 80 pounds of equipment I want to tell you something if I've got to wear 80 pounds of equipment to put a fire out I'll just dress like I am I can move faster and quicker how foolish would that be of a fireman how foolish would it be of a fireman to go to a fire dressed in his khaki pants and his pullover shirt knowing that he's fixing to enter a blaze20:08blaze of a temperature of 200 300 plus degrees we get up every morning and we walk out of the house and we've never been to knee to be dressed by the Lord Jesus Christ through the work of his Holy Spirit to face the greatest enemy the world has ever known and think we're gonna win oh I went to someone else I went to the chief of police and he gave me20:38gave me this I want you to know something shoot I ain't never had one of these on so here we go wow Hunter did you go back come on back hit me baby right there oh come on hit21:07on hit me hard oh okay go back you're a little stronger I thought y'all know what this is it's a bulletproof vest it's a bulletproof vest exactly how foolish is it for police officers now the chief of police said that I could have it because he said he has other guys that he requires to wear theirs and he said I probably won't need mine so I want to get back to him as first as I can but how foolish21:37foolish would it be for a police officer to go out and do his duty and not have his vest on you see Paul is writing to us a very important note in this letter and the note is is that we as believers in Jesus Christ have an enemy that's waiting out there he studied us he understands us he22:07he knows who we are he knows what we're about and he's waiting on the opportunity that he can find to cause us to fall the bible says he's going to shoot fiery darts at us I want you to think about that for just a minute fiery darts fiery darts would be easy to dodge right but when we study history and we study let's say Indians and let's22:36and let's say people that use fiery darts what were fiery darts used for they weren't used to necessarily shoot the people they were used as a diversion to destroy the camp they would catch the tents on fire the buildings on fire the houses the wood whatever you saw them coming you could get away from them but for the most part they created such a distraction and a aversion in your life that you weren't able to focus on the facts23:06facts and the needs and concerns that you were really facing and so when Paul says those fiery darts are going to come don't think for a minute that Satan hasn't already created some distractions that he has shot over the bow cause you to be distracted from the purpose and design that God has set forth for you so Paul says we have a purpose and our purpose is that23:36that we would stand against the schemes of the devil Ephesians 4 25 therefore therefore lay aside falsehood speak truth each one of you with his neighbor for we are members of one another be angry and not and yet not do not sin do not let the sun go down on your anger and do not give the devil an opportunity you see the devil is looking for opportunities through your anger through your emotions through your actions24:05actions through your laziness through my laziness to we've gotten up in a hurry and we've rushed out of the house and we haven't bit our knee before the Lord he's waiting right then to throw those darts distract us and the next thing you know we're falling in the very pit that we've dug for ourselves in 1st Timothy chapter 3 he says so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation24:35condemnation incurred by the24:42and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil having been held captive by him to do his will we have a purpose and a design and an understanding that Satan has those that he's already captured and we are to go out with the gospel of Jesus Christ and set them free there's a battle going on and the battle calls for us to understand our purpose25:11purpose where to go listen to listen to what James says submit therefore to the Lord resist the devil and he'll flee from you submit to the Lord bend your knee to the Lord and the devil will flee from you the devil can't stand a praying believer but a believer who thinks that he's prayed enough a believer who thinks that he's studied enough will fall easy pray to a works of the devil so our purpose is important notice25:41notice what first and first Peter chapter five verse eight he says be of sober spirit be on the alert your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring line seeking someone to devire can you imagine what it was like for David he was the king of a great kingdom everything was going David's way he had the same struggles26:11struggles as any father just like you and I are but things were going good until one day David decided that hey there's nothing wrong with me sending out my generals and my army to fight while I stay here in the castle that way at least I can rest some and by the way I'm the king why shouldn't I be able to stay home why shouldn't I be able to relax why26:40why shouldn't I be able to rest why shouldn't I be able to command someone else to go out why would I go out why don't I just let somebody else do that for me let me tell you something in the church today that very mindset exists to such a strong tragic example that we beg people every week to do ministry somewhere but David27:10David did that and he stayed home and he's going to go up on the roof of his castle out on the porch and chill a while in the sunlight or the evening or the beauty have a breeze and because he's not where he's supposed to be do you know the rest of the story Satan said I got him I got him right here he's not going out I got him and so as David goes up27:40up he used the beauty of another woman bathing on her own roof minding her own business doing her own thing but David's like any red blooded man in this room you know I have some real spiritual people that tell me they never see a pretty woman or they never look at another woman at the beach or they never look and you know that's why I wear real dark sunglasses so my wife can't see where my28:09eye no that's why I read books but anyway you can sit out there and say those things don't bother you and I'm not going to tell you what you might be but there's a good chance you're dead because Satan knows your weakness well let me share another weakness with you what if you're one of those guys you just28:39you just got you want your family to have a nice car you want your family to have a nice house you want your children to wear the best clothes you want your wife to look the best she can look so you work 80 90 hours a week when working 40 to 30 hours a week or 40 hours a week or 45 hours a week will pay the bills you just won't have to drive that super nice extraordinary expensive vehicle you just will take it easy and get by with what you've got but you don't mind working all that and work and money become your god29:09god and you don't spend time with your family and your children don't have a godly example in their home and we wonder why they grow up and they become what they become with all sorts of uncertainty because they never had the proper example set for them in the home because they never saw dad get dressed do you realize that when my son started growing beards they didn't have to go hey dad how do I do that they watched me do it I did it you know they watched me shave and we29:39and we talk about it now some of them have issues with shaving some of them don't but anyway the reality is that they learn you know my sons came to me they said why I said why your shoes aren't tied they said I can't tie dog dumb teachers at school don't they know they're supposed to teach you how to tie your shoes no that's my job I taught them how to tie their shoes when my sons wanted to know about Jesus Christ they went to one of my deacons because30:08because they knew I didn't know anything about him because of the way I lived my life at home and the way I preached at church no that's not what they did they came to me because they knew what they had been hearing and what they had been listening to and what they had been seeing just like what your children ought to be seeing and doing and listening to and your neighbors and your co-workers and your friends and those that God surrounds you with next we need to be prepared preparation comes30:38comes with knowledge no doubt if you're ignorant of certain things you're not going to know what to do but here's what this passage answers for us first of all who is the enemy rulers authorities cosmic powers present darkness spiritual forces of evil it's a long list of enemies isn't it so that means spiritual darkness is an enemy cosmic powers let me tell you something that will blow your mind when you read Ephesians you read over in Ephesians31:08Ephesians chapter 1 and 2 you'll also see the same thing that Paul's talking about in chapter 6 and that is that you really have a dual position before God you have this position that you have right now and then you have a literal spiritual position before God that's why one of the knowledgeable things that we need to understand is where the battles fault nothing is fault on earth that's not confirmed in heaven did you know that Paul said our spiritual battles are in spiritual places in other words we are fighting spiritual battles31:37battles going on if you don't believe that go back to Daniel and you'll read that Daniel was sent for some help and an angel was coming to Daniel but the angel was held up and because the angel was held up31:55wait there are battles going around in spiritual realms that we need to know about and in those battles there's a prince of darkness who leads his foe to thwart what's going on in our lives you and I need to understand that the only way we're going to fight in that battle32:25battle we'll see in a minute but we need to understand let's just go back preparation means knowledge knowledge of the enemy where's the battle fault heavenly places where's the battle fault in your heart and in my heart the outcome is determined in heaven but the outcome is felt here in other words you and I are a direct result of what God is doing in heaven in other words Jesus Christ is sitting at the right hand of the father interceding32:55interceding on your behalf and my behalf and you say you're saying a lot of things that really confuse me you know they confuse me too you you I sometimes have a hard time understanding all the things that I read in scripture but if there's anything that's clear it's what's written clear and the clarity of this passage is real Paul saying dress yourselves for the spiritual battle that you're going to find in your life when that evil day comes upon33:25upon you and Satan literally throws everything at you but know this these spiritual battles began in heavenly places there's participation will you participate in the battle well you know I thought about that yeah I will no I won't yeah I will no I won't because you see I can choose not to participate right no33:55no when the when the evil day comes you are going to participate in a multiplicity of ways you are going to participate by being prepared to overcome that day with being dressed for that day you put on your bulletproof vest you put on your fire suit and you wade out into the fire and you wade out into the blazing gun battle because you're not afraid you're prepared or you34:23you become a victim you see there are victims in battles as well there are those people that are in battle that determine they're not going to fight and they're shot anyway or they determine that they're not going to wear a 70 pound outfit with a hose pipe pulled and they're just going to run right in there and take care of themselves and they can't so34:51so folks I want to ask you which is the smarter for us here today to consider God's word and Paul's warning and start dressing appropriately or just say you know I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing and watch our families fall apart watch our marriages fall apart watch our children35:21children become ultra rebellious disrespectful and ultimately watch our church die due to lack of leadership and participation by people who dressed for the occasion there's a promise and this is what's the most important thing for us today look at Ephesians chapter 6 verse 18 Paul35:49Paul says here's how we fight once we're dressed with all prayer and petition pray at all times in the spirit I get tickled every now and then talking to people and get talking about guns and you know they say well you don't ever36:19ever see me that I'm not toting toting what gun really where's where's it at well they don't want to tell you where it's at because then I know how to take it away no it's not really yet but they tote because they want to protect themselves we can set up security guards out in the vestibule to protect ourselves I could have a couple of big guys down36:49down here in the event that people hated me bad enough to attack the pulpit that would protect me but guys I want to tell you something that's not what Paul tells us we need to protect ourselves from if we would spend the money that we spend to protect our homes and the things that we deem imported in our home on the church and the evangelism and discipleship of the body of Christ37:18Christ we wouldn't need all the armament that we buy Paul says we put these things on because they're given to us from God with all prayer and petition pray at all times in the spirit and with this in view be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints and pray on my behalf that utterances37:48utterances may be given to me with all prayer and petition pray at all times in the spirit you know what this tells me we're losing the battle as men we're losing the battle as families we're losing the battle in the church because we're not praying the bottom line we have the most knowledgeable body in the38:18in the world why if you don't know something biblical this day and age just google it just google google will pull you up 1400 different places that you can go to to study a particular theology doctrine whether it's true or not you can find it it's there but the one thing that38:47that God cries out for us to do and the only way you're going to dress in the full armor of God is on your knees because you see you can't go put on a Kevlar vest and you can't just go put on a fireman's uniform and how foolish would it be for me to come to work in the morning with a bulletproof vest a fireman's uniform and fireman's hat and say39:20but what I can come in as a man as a woman as a child of God having been on my face and fully dressed for the day's events and when the evil day comes be prepared to stand against the schemes that Satan has39:50has established to cause me to fall now I want to take a vote alright this thing's bubbled it's been in the heat whoops poor guy how40:15how many of you guys want to be a fireman alright I see that hand back there how many of you would let your child be a fireman and not wear the uniform how40:34how many of you want to be a soldier how many of you been a soldier back in your day bud they didn't give these things out like that did they flight41:04flight jackets but if you knew it was going to protect your life you did not not wear did you how many of us would want to send our children and families fathers and sisters brothers to be a police officer or to do battle without a flight41:34flight jacket or without a kevlar vest or without a helmet or a weapon then I want to ask you this why would any one of us walk out of this room today not being fully dressed in the armor of God to stand against what's about to happen when you walk out the doors if you may happen before you walk out or what you're going to face this week not knowing not even thinking about it how foolish42:03foolish would it be above all know Jesus Christ above all obey his word above all stand and Paul says when I say stand stand from how can I be a good dad put on the armor of God how can I be a good granddad put on the armor of God how can I be a good husband put on the42:33the armor of God how can I be a good preacher put on the armor of God how can I be a neighbor put on the armor of God how can I be anything put on the armor of God Father as we gather here in this place today it's time that we the church got dressed got dressed for the occasion quit putting aside43:03aside quit putting off the need to be fully prepared and armed for the occasion that we now face in our world God there is no way according to your word we're going to be able to stand and withstand the evil that comes at us unless Lord unless we are willing to get dressed in the full armor43:33armor of God putting on the breastplate of righteousness girding our loins with truth being prepared to follow you wherever you go knowing that we're fully prepared to stand against the evil day and the schemes that Satan desires to throw at us God44:03God help us listen to your Holy Spirit that we might hear what the word is saying today and obey it in Jesus name I pray amen to ask to stand for him of invitation as you stand I want to challenge you simply are you dressed you say I'm dressed no no are you dressed are you prepared for the day's events those events that you can't even foresee are you44:33you prepared are you prepared for the week ahead are you prepared as a father are you prepared as a husband are you prepared as a young man are you prepared when Satan throws his temptations at you if not get prepared today come forward confess Christ as your savior and begin the greatest journey you'll have by dressing every day in the armament of45:02of God himself during this invitation if you don't know Christ your personal savior I invite you to come if you don't know if this is a church
