I'm sorry, I'm sorry.0:30All right, well good morning Bethel family, how are we doing?1:00Man, it is always my honor to be back with you guys because there are very few places for me as a guy who goes and preaches in different churches in different locations every single week, there are very few places that I get to say roll tide and I don't get like tomatoes thrown at me. Now some of you Auburn fans want to choke me out right now. But thankful for my Crimson Tide faithful in the room.1:27God bless you, God keep you, and may his face shine upon you. For the rest of you, I'm sorry. But always good to be back, man. Josh and I were talking earlier this morning. I think this is my fourth year with you guys. So you really have become family. And the great part is, I don't, I don't, amen. I don't have to deal with the armless thing with you guys, but I will.1:56For you guys who are new, maybe you're visiting for the first time and you're wondering what happened to that pastor's arms. Let me, let me just say this. This is in a recent development. I was born this way. This is the equipment I came with. I promise I'll be okay. But the, the, the Lord in his kindness, man, just in the, in the best way I can explain, not only designed me in such a way where I don't need arms, but he designed me in such2:23a way that just because of my disability allows me to speak to the power and to the grace and to the kindness of God that extends far beyond what my circumstances ever could be, even if I was made just as you guys were. And, and so what I want us to see this morning is, as we wrap up just this series in the whole story for, for us in Christ, like how do we as believers, how do, how do we function2:51as the body of Christ? How do, how do we live our life, not only individually in, in light of the grace and the power and the calling of God, but how do we as a church, and when I say church, like I'm, I'm not only speaking of you guys just gathered together this morning as, as the Bethel family, but here's the thing I want you to see this morning. Church is a much bigger and broader picture, like a church capital C. Like y'all know and3:17understand that the church is gathered in, in Reader, North Dakota, in one of our North American Mission Board church plants. This is a church of 35 people in a town of 350 people that y'all hear literally next Sunday, they will baptize their third believer in the history of this, this, the seven month history of this church's church plant, that God is working in churches like that, God is working3:46in churches scattered all across the globe, God is working in churches even on the other side of town right now. And so what I want us to know this morning is God is working in us as a church both here, God is working in, in the church capital C, and, and for us as believers that also calls us to do something with the grace and with the calling with which we as the church are4:10given. Because like y'all, here's the thing, you will not grow in Christ by yourself. You will not grow in Christ if you try to do this as some sort of solo act. Like y'all, for me, within, within the context of my story, I am not here opening up the word of God with you guys this morning just because I tried harder than everybody else. Just because I like fought my way into the kingdom of God, that's not how the gospel works.4:37Like y'all, I came to Christ because a 15-year-old kid in my biology class invited me to a youth group lock-in. And there at that lock-in, a student pastor sat with this broken 15-year-old armless kid for more than two hours and just shared the gospel with me that ultimately brought me to Christ. In the weeks that followed, a, a, a, a guy who was the head of a, uh, the head of a seminary5:03comes up to me and begins to disciple me for the next 16 months of my life to, to just show me more of what it means to follow Jesus. And just person after person after person that God put in my life to not only introduce me to the gospel of Jesus Christ, but to see me grow in Christ. Like y'all, my story is not my story.5:30It, it very much so is his. And so it is for each and every one of us in here. We don't grow in isolation. We're not given some sort of Christian incubator that we can just sit under a heat lamp and just pop, here's a Christian. Like y'all, for, for us, we, we grow, we grow in community. We grow in, as Jesus says in John 15, we grow in abiding in him.5:56We grow in a relationship with Christ. We grow in a relationship with each other. And this morning, I want us to see the challenge of us to grow and to live and to thrive. With that is our story. So if you brought a copy of God's word, I'd encourage you to turn with me to Romans chapter 15. If you don't have your own Bible with you, we'll have the scripture up on the screen here6:20in just a moment. Here's the thing that I want us to see before we jump in here to Romans 15. Romans, it kind of breaks up into three different little sections. I guess if you were to summarize Romans into just three separate blocks, the first seven chapters of Romans paints the picture of just how devastating sin is. Paul even starts off Romans chapter one with basically the picture that God has given mankind6:49over to the lust of his flesh as the discipline for our sin, just as, as a race of humans. Romans chapter three says we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans chapter six says the wages, the paycheck that our life, our sin, our brokenness has earned us is death and eternal separation from God. Paul even finishes Romans chapter seven by saying, listen, I don't do the things that I know I7:15should do. I do the things that I know I should not do. And he finishes Romans chapter seven with literally, he says, who's going to save me from this body of death? My sin is a problem. My sin is devastating me. The first seven chapters of Romans, if we could be honest, is just bad news. But then in Romans chapter eight through Romans chapter 10, or really Romans chapter 11, we get7:40introduced to the good news of the gospel. Romans chapter eight, verse one says, there is therefore no condemnation for those of us who are in Christ Jesus. Like y'all, the good news in the midst of our bad news is Jesus stepped into our mess, saved us from our sins, all by his grace, all by his work. And as Romans chapter 10 says, that if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved.8:10That for us, the gospel, the greatest news of it, it is dependent on God's awesomeness and not ours. And so then everything in Romans changes in Romans chapter 12 is what is our response to the good news? What do we do with this life, with this eternal salvation that we're given in grace? And here in Romans 15, this is more of the response for us as believers. What do we do in light of the life-changing grace of the gospel of Christ?8:37And so read with me Romans chapter 15, starting in verse 1. So the word of the Lord says this, that we who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but it is written, the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction that through endurance9:06and through the encouragement of the scriptures that we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another in accord with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God. Let me pray for us as we continue on this morning.9:34Father, in these few moments, as we just look at the challenge of the word of God that we read here in Romans chapter 15, God, may we see that you have called us to be people who build up and not tear down. God, that you have called us to be a people anchored by hope. You have called us to be a people who both trust in Christ and make Christ known with the life that you have given us. Father, this morning, I pray that's true of each and every one of us.10:02God, may we be believers who live and trust and serve and talk like you truly are the greatest news we've ever come to know. Father, we love you. We thank you. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Listen, this morning here in Romans 15, there's three big takeaways that I want us to see from this scripture this morning, and the first thing that I want you guys to see is this for us10:28as Christians, that believers are builders. Believers are builders. Paul says this in those first two verses. He says, we who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. Now, listen, for some of us in here this morning, we look especially at verse one and we think, well, you know what, Paul's talking about strong people here and that is not me.10:55Like, y'all, easy for me, easy for some of us in here to say, because it's like, in the physical sense of things, do my biceps compare to any of you in this room? No. Like, your boy ain't built for a gun show. I'm never going to be a professional arm wrestler. Like, there's nothing, there's nothing physically strong about the presence that I bring to the table. That's not what Paul's talking about. And again, some of us in here, we want to look at things in the spiritual sense of things.11:21And we think, God, how many times have I doubted? God, how many times have I just wanted to tap out, to walk away? How many times have I felt just broken and weak? God, I'm not strong. Well, the guy who writes Romans, like, from beginning to end, the guy who writes especially these two verses that we're really focusing on here in this moment, the guy who talks about11:48those of us who are strong is also the guy that he writes to the Corinthian church. He describes this situation that he's dealing with in his life, that he describes as the thorn in the flesh of his life. It is something that torments him. It's something that is excruciating. And it says, as he writes to the Corinthian church, he says, listen, I pleaded with God three times for this hurt and for this brokenness to go away. And God's only response to him is, my grace is sufficient for you.12:18For my power is perfected in your weakness. Here's a man that in such a clear way, even God himself is talking about the weakness that is present in Paul's life. But that weakness, more often than not, bears evidence to the strength and to the power of God in each and every one of our lives. For those of us in this room this morning that think, you know what, God, I'm not that12:48strong. God, I'm not that powerful. You honestly might be the most strong and powerful person in the room because you realize how weak you truly are. You realize how powerful and how strong and how sustaining he is. And so in light of that, in light of all of us in here that might think we're weak, we're not the right person for God to use for us to go and display the strength and the power in the gospel of God, he says right there in verse one that we have an obligation to bear13:18with the weak. That word, again, obligation. That is, y'all, you are bound. You have no excuse. You have no reason to run away from being able to pour into the lives of those that God has surrounded you with. Y'all, building is difficult. Especially when we talk about pouring into the lives of others. I think of the men and the women. I think of my mom and my dad. I think of my student pastor.13:47I think of those all along the way who poured into my broken life. I think, especially of my parents, like, y'all, I can't imagine for my mom and dad, like, as they welcome me into the world, I am not their plan A. No parent in here wants to sign up for a life of a child that has a significant disability. There aren't a tremendous amount of parenting books on how to navigate this, on the challenges,14:14on the emotional struggles, on the brokenness, on the hurt, on just the, what the next day will hold. But you know what? My parents saw my weakness and saw my brokenness and stepped right into it and never complained about it. I have an older brother that's 6'5", 220 pounds. He's in the U.S. Special Forces. Like, he's Jason Bourne. And then, then you got 5'9", doughy, armless me.14:41You know, like, my dad in all his redneckery never once compared Jason Bourne to the guy that, you know, is just not the picture of physical manly health. My dad always looked at me as his son just as much as my huge older brother was his son. My dad chose to bear with the weakness of the life that I had.15:11My dad chose to be one who bore with what I brought to the table, who gave me strength, who gave me encouragement, who gave me love, who gave me insight, and who just did what he could to pour himself into me. Like, y'all, and it's not, it's not a novel thing. Like, I think for a lot of us in here, we think that bearing with the failings of others, that being there for the weak in our lives, like, y'all, honestly, for us in this room, when we15:41start to think, well, what is that call that God is giving us here in Romans 15? What does that have to do with me? Like, how can I bear with the failings of the weak? Here's my challenge. I want to tell you, just show up. Just show up. Just be present. Listen. Don't feel like you've got to offer up some scholarly counsel like y'all. In all the times that I served in the local church as a pastor, and when I would have to16:08show up in tragic situations, in loss, in terrible health diagnosis, when I would walk up to that family's door, I knew nothing that I am about to say is going to stay with them. There isn't a single bit of counsel. There isn't a single, like, smart, witty thing that I'm going to say in the next 30 minutes that will stick with them, but I guarantee you, and I mean, even to this day, I can go16:37through the laundry list of people that this is true for, those families always remembered that I was there. They don't remember all the great sermon points. They don't even remember the resources, the books that I gave them when I showed up on their doorstep, but they remembered that their pastor was there. They remembered that their friend was there to listen, to love, to cry with them, to weep with them. That's what Paul paints in just the couple of chapters before this.17:04Paul says this in Romans 12. He says, rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Like, y'all, for us to be builders, we don't have to have a counseling degree. We don't have to be the most theologically robust person in the room. We just have to love and be present like Jesus loved and was present in the lives of so many17:31of those that he came across in his ministry. Sometimes the best gospel ministry is just a ministry of presence. If you want to be a builder, if you want to be someone who bears with the failings of the week, if you want to love your family well, if you want to love your friend group well, if you want to be around the co-workers that God has put in your life, just show up. Just show up like Jesus has in your life, time after time, how Jesus has listened to your17:58prayers, to your doubts, to your groanings, to your hurts, how Jesus loved you well. Jesus already paved the way for you. Jesus gave you the example that you need. Be a builder. Be someone who steps into the lives of those who are weak, even when you feel like that that's true of you, and represent the Savior that you follow. Second thing that I want you guys to see from here in Romans 15, it is the fact that believers18:25endure and are encouraged by hope. Believers endure and are encouraged by hope. Paul says this in verses 4 and 5 here in Romans 15. He says, for whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction that through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures that we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live with such harmony with one another in accord with Christ Jesus.18:55So here's what Paul is saying that whatever was written in the former days. So again, for us on this side of the cross, that Bible that is sitting in your lap right now is your greatest source of encouragement and endurance that you have in this life. Like y'all, see this for the treasure trove that it is. See scripture as the gift of encouragement, the gift of endurance, the gift of hope that you guys need in your life on a day-to-day basis.19:23Because I think for a lot of us in here, if we're to be completely honest, I think we all could use a little bit more hope in the life that we live. As you look across the landscape of the world that we live in, it is all brokenness. It is all bad news. It is all World War III right on our doorstep sort of situation. We need hope. Well, all the things that we have that are written all through the pages of this scripture, it is there to give you hope and to give you encouragement. So y'all, if that is the case of the word of God, then why don't we spend more time with19:53it? And I know that for a lot of us in here, we are busy people. We are, I mean, y'all, I've got two kids that are in three different sports right now. I'm usually in a different city every weekend. Next week, I will be in three states in five days preaching nine different sermons. And it's like, I'm just trying to remember what state I'm in most weeks, you know?20:21Like, I understand that we're people that are busy. We're people that live by our calendar. How in the world are we going to fit in 15, 20 more minutes to either wake up early in the morning or to just squeeze in time to open up our Bible, to open up our Bible app and to get into the word of God? I think for a lot of us, we feel like we're stretched to our max and we just can't carve out that time. Well, here's my challenge to you.20:52When you go home to this afternoon, when you have a little spare time tonight, for you iPhone users, I would challenge you, open up the Screen Time app on your phone. And just let me know what the average daily breakdown of the time that you spend on your phone is. Because for the average American right now, the average American spends about three hours and 15 minutes on their phone in a given 24-hour period. We got time.21:21We've got a little bit of time. And even if it's just, y'all, even if we're just talking 10 minutes, 15 minutes, find that just small little section of your life to open up the word of God, because this is something that is meant to feed you. This is something that is meant to build you up. The author of Hebrews says this about just all of Scripture. It says in Hebrews 12, verse 1, it says, Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight21:47and sin that clings to us closely, and let us run the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of God. Like y'all, every story in Scripture is to remind you that God has your back. It is to remind you there is nothing that you will walk through in this life that will separate you from the grace and the power and the plans of God in your life.22:16When you look at Moses, here's a guy with a speech impediment that God calls to deliver his million people out from underneath the grasp of the most powerful man on the planet at the time in the person of Pharaoh. Yet God chose to use the stuttering Moses to save his entire people. And when you look at the calling of Jeremiah, a young man who at the time of his calling, God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet to Israel at the age of 15.22:46Like in our modern context, we don't trust our 15-year-olds to drive a car by themselves right now. And God chose a 15-year-old to be the mouthpiece to an entire nation on just what the calling and expectation of the creator and sustainer of the universe was for the people of Israel. If God can call that 15-year-old, God can call you. Or if you look at the 12 disciples, here you have fishermen.23:15So again, in first century Israel sort of terms, this is a minimum wage worker. This is a guy that didn't finish high school. This is a person with no college degree. Jesus says, those are going to be my guys that I build my modern church on. Jesus chooses Matthew, the sinner, the liar, the tax collector. Jesus says, I want a guy with a little bit of a story to be one of the men that goes and takes the23:44gospel to the outer reaches of the world. Just the picture of who Jesus calls in his 12 disciples is the reminder for us that Jesus can call any one of us. Whether we have a high school education, college education, no education, whether we have a story that is full of brokenness or a story that is nothing but us following after Jesus for all of the life24:08that we can remember, it doesn't matter who you are, the stories and the accounts and the truths of the word of God are meant to carry us along. It's meant to fuel us. And even like y'all, as Paul goes on to say when he says there in verse 5, may the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another in Christ Jesus. The picture that God being the one who grants encouragement, who grants endurance, that for24:36us as his people, that we are meant to live our life as the church in such a way that we are people of endurance, we are people of encouragement, we are meant to nudge one another along in our faith journey as well. Like y'all, I didn't get to this place where I am in my life and in my ministry by myself. God put men and women around me to encourage me, to nudge me.25:04And sometimes it's just, it has come in the most unexpected ways. I'll never forget back in 2020, I'm preaching at a large church in South Georgia. And it was pretty neat because right as, you know, kind of like this morning, I was sitting on the front row, you know, getting ready to preach. It was the first song in worship. And this woman walks in and sits on the pew right behind where I was sitting, and she has this young man in her arms that was born without arms or legs.25:34Basically, he was an amputee from both elbows down, both knees down. She's holding this little guy. And it was like, I was focused on worship there for a minute, but I was like, you know what? I'm going to focus on the guy that him and I have a few things in common at this point. And so I just, I stopped singing and I sat down on that little second pew beside this little boy named Trey. And man, for the next two songs, we just kind of talked life because I figured in that moment,26:00buddy, there's not too many people that you're going to come across in your life that has two empty sleeves in common like you do. And so, you know, I just tried to take those next few minutes and encourage him, share just my story with him, pray over him. And then, you know, then it was time for me to preach. And so jump up and preach and, you know, finish the service. And then I got to speak with Trey and speak with the woman that actually ended up bringing26:27Trey to church that morning was his third grade teacher. Wasn't even his mama, but the teacher had heard I was going to be in town. And she thought, you know what? These two might get along. And she was right. And I'll never forget, like, I'm finishing up that service. I'm getting ready to walk out. And I thought that moment, that church was for that conversation right there. But in between the time I finished up talking with this kid, Trey, and literally I'm done.26:57Service is over. Most of everybody has left the church. In between the time that I walked from literally the front kind of altar area of the church out to my car, two people stopped me from the church. And just one hugged my neck. One just had one simple sentence to say. And both people, they literally only said one sentence to me. And both people told me, don't stop what you're doing.27:25Don't stop what you're doing. You're making a difference. And that was all they said. And I thought that was so weird. Because here's the thing about me. I love the calling that God has given me. Like, y'all, I go and take the gospel to a new place and to a new church and to a new city week in and week out. I love my job. I love the calling that God has set on my life. And that was true of me six years ago. So I thought, that's weird that these people think I'm about to tap out. So I go over to my car.27:54I drive home. And here's the thing. Five days later, the entire world shut down. Five days later, the COVID lockdowns hit. People were stuck in their house, and I did not get to preach for the next six months of my life. And for a person who's dependent on going and preaching, just for me to have a livelihood, I didn't earn money from my family for the next six months. And so for me, it was a very real temptation for me to quit, for me to walk away from the28:23calling that God had given me. But I have never forgotten those two people that God used at that church to remind me to not quit, to not tap out, to not back away, to not walk from what God has called me to do in my life and what he was laying right in front of me to walk in. God used those people to keep me going.28:52And by the grace of God, here we are six years later, the gospel continues to be proclaimed. God continues to open doors, all because God was simply reminding me that he was not done with me yet. That's the power that the church brings to the table. And for some of us in here, like y'all, you know in your life, you need encouragement. You need a nudging. You need someone to love you, to listen to you in your mess. Because if we're honest, not a lot of people know what you're going through in your life29:21right now. Not a lot of people know how hard it is for you. Not a lot of people know the trials that you're walking through. Because we think when we walk into this place, we have to put on this like persona that we're perfect. We feel the pressure to walk into church and act like everything's okay, that it's all sunshine and rainbows when we know it's not. Like y'all, Jesus didn't die for you to fake it.29:48Jesus died to save you from your sins and to give you a body of believers that are going to go to war for you when you need it. So walk into this place not feeling like you have to be perfect, but walk into this place being ready to lay down your burdens and your hurt and your brokenness, because that's why Jesus died, to give you brothers and sisters like this. That is what you have, that is what the God of encouragement and endurance has given us30:14to live in that sort of harmony. Last thing I want us to see from here in Romans 15, it's that believers live with Jesus as the hero of their life. Believers live with Jesus as the hero of their life. Look in verses 6 and 7, Paul says this, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God.30:41Like y'all, here's the thing, we live in a world where it's easy to have heroes. Like we have heroes in sort of the general sense of things. You know, you look at people throughout history, you read biographies, you think, man, I want to grow up and be like them. We have, you know, for some of you in this room, like Derek Henry might be your hero. You know, Bo Jackson might be your hero. I don't know like who your hero is.31:10Like we build up some of these like sports heroes in our life. Some of us in here, we have spiritual heroes. You look at people throughout church history, you look at the Corrie ten booms, you look at the Hudson Taylors, you look maybe even for some of your pastors, your small group leaders, your grandmas, your moms, like we look at people like that as our heroes. But I love the way that Paul says this. And as he paints this picture of just us having those that we follow, us having those that31:36we hold up almost on a pedestal, Paul challenges the Corinthian church. He says, listen, imitate me. Like Paul is saying this, follow the path that I have followed. But he says, as I imitate Jesus, imitate me as I imitate Christ. Like y'all, we all want to have heroes in our life, whether they are spiritual or not, but they should not supersede our vision and our following after and our placing our trust32:04in Christ and Christ alone. You need to have Jesus as the focus of your life, not your pastors, not your sports heroes, not your friends, not your family. Jesus should be the focus of our life because I guarantee you Jesus will be the one that will not let you down. He's not going to walk away from you. He's not going to disappoint you. He's not going to forsake you.32:34He's going to continue to walk by you in all that you do. And like y'all, for us, when Jesus is the focus of our life, it starts with us trusting and resting in him as our savior and Lord. Like we talked about in Romans chapter 10, that confession that Jesus is the Lord of our life, that he is the king, that he is the owner, that he is our everything. And in that, he saves us from our sins. He gives us eternal hope. He begins to work in us things like Galatians chapter 5 describes as the fruit of the spirit.33:02He begins to bring all of these fruits to bear in our life. But then our response to that good news, our response to that saving grace, Paul says this in Romans chapter 12, that our one acceptable form of worship is to offer up our lives as a living sacrifice. When Jesus is the hero of your life, your life looks like it. When Jesus is the hero of your life, your mouth begins to talk about Jesus, begins to praise33:31Jesus. Like y'all, if your worship is contained to this sanctuary, you've missed the point of worship. Like y'all, for us, our jobs ought to show Christ to the world, our relationships ought to show Christ to the world, our time, our talents, our gifts, everything ought to reflect him. And then the good news is this, that ultimately, Paul says this in Philippians chapter 1, that33:56for the life found in Christ, that to live is Jesus and to die is gain. That one day we pass from this life to the next and we step into eternity and we get to see the hero of our earthly life and spend eternity worshiping him for what he has done throughout the whole of our lives. When Jesus is the hero of your life, he begins to become your focus, he begins to become your34:23mission, he begins to become your encouragement, and ultimately, he begins to become your reward. And church, this morning, is that true of you? Or is Jesus just a side piece part of your Sunday living? Is Jesus the hero of your Sundays? And not such a part of any other day?34:50And if that's the case, some of you this morning need to seek out Christ as the Lord and Savior and hope of your life. And if you need to take that step this morning, if you realize that you need Jesus to save you from your sins, you realize you need Jesus to be the Lord of your life. Here in a moment, we will stand and we will sing. And if you need just somebody to talk to, man, these guys would be more than glad to talk to you.35:21I think y'all guys have a connection center out in the lobby. Man, go and talk to one of them. They would love to show you just what it means to follow Jesus with the whole of your life. But church, for a lot of us this morning, I was preaching at those who claim the name of Christ. Are we people who build? Are we people that step into the lives of the weak in our life?35:49And are we people who are bound by hope? Because this morning, I pray that that is true. Because y'all, that is how this community changes for the glory of God. When his people start living like he is the good news, that he is the king and lord and hope of our life.
