Asking for a Friend

  I don't want to deny Jesus in front of the world. Paul, Romans 10, 9, writes that we are to confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord. That sounds like a verbal, guttural acclamation. So can I follow Jesus Christ without confessing externally? Why would I? Well, can I, can I follow Jesus Christ without public professions of faith?

  That's Jesus' way of telling people who will follow him. If the Bible is true, it is necessary. It is necessary. Not only is it necessary, Paul says in Romans 10, verse 17.   It's fascinating that Solomon would use the word heart, which we translate mind, because I think about Romans 10. And I've always loved the beauty of language, although I'm not necessarily eloquent. I like other people who can speak better than myself. And the New Testament says if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. You know that scripture. It says the message is near to you in your mouth and your heart.

  And the promise we have in the Word is that when you cry out to God, He does hear you. Jesus hears your cry. Romans 10, verse 9. If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Why? Because when you call out, when you confess, it's calling out loud, saying out loud. God hears that confession.

  God hears that confession. And the reminder we have in Judges is that when you are on your darkest day, if you call out to Jesus, He can and He will hear you. What a glorious promise is that Jesus is faithful. And then it says in Romans 10. For Scripture says, everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame. You might be living in shame, you might feel ashamed, but you will never be put to shame in Jesus Christ.

The JESUS Story

  What a deep confession of faith. Romans 10, verse 9 and 10, specifically verse 10, says this with the heart that one believes into righteousness and it is with the mouth one confesses unto salvation. This is a deep mixture in her life, a profound trust in her. And as I read this narrative, I ask myself, Josh, do you believe as much as Martha believed? Because that's what Jesus does in our life.
