If you brought your Bible, I hope you did. If you didn't, turn with me, or if you did, turn with me to Philippians chapter 2. If you didn't, lean over and grab somebody. Maybe you want to boot up your phone if you've got it on your phone or your iPad, whatever you've got it on. But let's look at Philippians chapter 2. Philippians chapter 2, the submissive mind under the Joyful Heart series today.0:49We are unpacking, for those of you that are guests here today, we are looking at a chapter a week over the next three weeks, four weeks now, four weeks through the month of February in a joyful heart looking at Philippians. There's no way possible that you can completely cover Philippians in four weeks. There's just no way, there's too much material there, so we might revisit this again at some point.1:16But I want us to look at Philippians 2, kind of a great example for us to look at, kind of a launch of this chapter of Philippians chapter 2, beginning with the first verse. The Bible says, the New American Standard Version says, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there's any consolation of love, if there's any fellowship of the Spirit and any affection and compassion,1:41verse 2, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in the Spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfish or empty conceit, but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself. Do not merely look out for your own personal interest, but also the interest of others.2:08Have this attitude in yourself, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a bondservant, and being made in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man.2:37He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. Therefore, also God highly exalted him and bestowed upon him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.3:05There is a difference between unity and uniformity in church workers today. True spiritual unity comes from within. It is a matter of the heart. Uniformity is the result of pressures from without. Let's pray. Father, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight today.3:35Lord, we thank you. We love you. We praise you. And we are redeemed by the blood, and we are excited about that to proclaim your name today. Lord, I pray as we unpack your word today, you receive all the praise, all the glory, all the honor. Remove any obstacle standing away from us hearing from you today. And God, as we unpack your word today, I pray we walk away from this place as we've prayed all day, all week.4:00God, let us leave here differently than we came. God, we thank you for your text. It is an amazing portion of scripture today. And Father, I thank you for the freedom that we have in this place because the freedom that we have in you. Thank you for Bethel Church. Thank you for the testimony and the witness it is. And thank you for the work that you've done all these years here on this island called Bethel Baptist Church,4:29throughout the world, around the community, and each and every heart. God, thank you for the legacy that it has. God, there's much work to be done. God, there's great dangers that efface each and every church. In light of all of what's happened legally in this country recently, God, there is much work for us to be done.4:51The indictment of the New Testament church is on trial today. And God, I pray that we will be found faithful to stand firm on your inerrant, infallible, God-breathed portion of your word today. And Father, I pray that we're found faithful.5:20In Jesus' name we pray. And the church said, amen. Perhaps, perhaps the greatest danger facing the New Testament church is an attack on the source of the authority of the word of God. Spiritual apathy and general coldness and indifference to biblical truth and God's standards of righteousness also pose a grave and serious threat to the New Testament church today.5:49Such indifference is usually denied, often with some sort of self-deceptive sincerity, but it attacks the spirituality of the church. Equally to be feared is whatever attacks the unity of the New Testament church. All of these can be disrupted, weaken, and destroy the church,6:15and causing discord and disharmony and conflict and division amongst the body of believers called the New Testament church in the 21st century. Paul writes to the churches that he invested in these encouraging words. We're going to look at several passages and several churches that he wrote and let us understand that he wrote them to encourage them. If you'll notice with me in Romans chapter 15,6:45he writes to the church at Rome in Romans chapter 15, verse 5. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God.7:08He also writes to the church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians chapter 1, verse 10. I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree that there be no divisions among you, that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. He goes on to write in the second letter to the church at Corinth in 2 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 11.7:36A final greeting he writes to this wonderful congregation. Some final warnings, if I may, but a final greeting. He says, finally, brothers, rejoice. Now, I love it. When Paul says that, he just kind of sets apart. He says, finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, greet one another, live in peace,8:01and the God of love and peace be with you. Then he goes on down to verse 12, and he says, greet one another with a holy kiss. I like that. Greet one another with a holy kiss. Some of the men are smiling right now because that might be the only kiss that you get all week. So, it says, greet one another.8:29That's teenagers. That's for adults only right there. I'm not rewriting scripture. But it says, greet one another with a holy kiss. And all the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. But he back up in verse 11, brothers, rejoice, aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.8:57He writes on over to Galatians, Galatians, to the church at Galatia. He says in chapter 6, excuse me, chapter 5, verse 26, let us not become conceited, provoking one another, and envy one another, goes on down to verse 2 of chapter 6, bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.9:24So, if we're haughty and we think something of ourselves, we think more of ourselves, then we are really actually, Paul writing to the church at Galatia, he says we're nothing. Then he goes on to say in Ephesians, one of the great letters to the church at Ephesus, chapter 4, he says in verse 1, I therefore, a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.9:48Now, I love what he's saying there. Walk in a manner worthy of the calling. If you call yourself a Christ follower, then walk worthy of the calling that you call yourself to be. He says to the church at Ephesus, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing one another in love,10:18eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. He says there is one body, one Spirit, just as you are called to the one hope that belongs to your call. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God of all and all, Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.10:44Folks, let me tell you, he is one. And we serve one risen Savior. So church, he is telling not only the church at Philippi that we're going through some difficult moments because of some disunity in that faith family. He is also encouraging all of these others. And throughout Scripture, he does. This is just a sampling of it. I posted this this week. True spiritual unity is grounded in the unfathomable unity of the Trinity.11:13God the Father became God the Son and God then later became God the Holy Spirit, which indwells in the life of each and every one of us. It goes on to say that Jesus even said it best. In John 17, verse 21, notice what he says. May all be one, even as you, Father, are in me, I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you did sent me.11:42Church, in light of what's going on in the legal system today, we as the body of Christ, we must stand united. We must stand united in the Word of God. Not politically correct, but biblically surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We will stand accountable for the actions that have taken place12:09over the recent years and days and months of the legal upholdings in the judicial system today. We will stand before the Lord because of that. Every one of us will stand. Although you say, well, I didn't vote for that. We didn't come against it. We are a mighty force. And folks, let me tell you something. It grieves my heart that I will stand with blemished hands and blood on my hands12:35because of what has taken place. But let me give you hope, folks. We have the power to overturn anything. Amen? All we have to do is unite as the body of Christ to stand and say, we will not. We are one mind, one spirit, one body, one faith, one baptism, one God the Father, one who is over all, in all, and was given us grace to activate that.13:02Church, let me tell you something. He's waiting on us to make a stand. He is waiting on us to stand up and say, we will unite. Disunity among his people deeply grieves the Lord Jesus Christ. Not only disunity among the faith family, but when we don't make a stand, when we don't stand up and say, I will not tolerate that, it grieves his heart, church.13:30That's what he died for. He died for the salvation of man. He died for the scriptures. He died for the New Testament church. It should be every pastor, every church leader, every church member's prayer that men will not tear apart what God has so divinely joined together in the body of his church called the living New Testament work of God.13:57Paul's concern was not about doctrines, by the way. It was not about ideals or practice. It was about interpretation and standards and interests and preferences and personal choices. Those concerns should never be allowed to start any controversy with inside the body of Christ. It truly reflects a proud heart and promotes personal agendas and personal viewpoints. Unity in the word highly exalts inward and not outward.14:28It's internally desired, not externally compelled. It is spiritual, not ecclesiastical. It is heartfelt, not creedal. The spirit-motivated, spirit-empowered bonding of hearts, mind, and soul of God's children preserves the unity of the New Testament church. Church at Philippi. For the most part, they were a pretty good bunch of people. They were kind of like Bethel Church. There were some good people there.14:58Now, you say, there were some good people at Bethel? Yeah. Some of you. You say, I thought you said you love this fellowship. I do. But there are some of us that are just knuckleheads every now and then. Amen? Some of us just get our own personal agendas. And I want you to know something. Wait a minute before you think, Dad, you're throwing rocks at me. No. I threw them at me too. Because I have some personal preferences sometimes. And sometimes I don't like. And so I want my way.15:28And I want you to know some folks. I'm standing firm on what God's way is. So we have some people who have their personal preferences, right? This is my Sunday school class. No, it's not. It's God's Sunday school class. It's my church. No, it's not. It's God's church. This is my pew. Now, let's stop right there. I know. I can tell when some of you are out because I see your pews empty. Or your spot.15:59Right? We all are creatures of heaven, aren't we, Greg? I mean, Greg always sits about right there. I'll tell you, I know we're Greg. And old Trent sits about right there. And we know Brad sits right there because I make him sit right there. No? But we all have our personal spots, do we not? But you know, folks, let me tell you something. It's God's church, not our church. And God's going to send his man to serve his church. And when we get personal preference out of the way, he's going to send his man to serve his church.16:24The church at Philippi was, they were theologically sound. They were devoted. They were moral. They were zealous for the gospel. They were courageous. They were prayerful. They were, indeed, they were generous as well. But they had a few things that caused them some disharmony. They got personal preferences in the way. And the work suffered.16:53I gave some thoughts this week. And I wrote down the secret of joy in spite of circumstances is the single-mindedness of the believers. The secret of joy in spite of people is the submissive-mindedness of people. Verse 3 tells us that. Chapter 1, we studied last week. It is Christ first. Chapter 2 is others second. Paul in chapter 1 was the soul winner. Now in chapter 2, he becomes the servant.17:23Andrew Murray said it best this way. He said the humble person is not one who thinks meanly of himself. He simply does not think of himself at all. I want you to let that baptize over you just a little bit. Let it bathe over your spirit a little bit. Murray said the person, the humble person, is not one who thinks meanly of himself. He just simply does not think of himself at all. The most concise and practical teaching about the unity of the New Testament church is found in the first four verses of chapter 2.17:49And I want us to notice that. It clarifies the why believers should be of one mind. The spirit, what it means to be of one in spirit, mind and spirit. And how it can truly become one mind and one spirit. So notice with me those first four verses before we unpack the sermon today. The first four verses. If there is any encouragement in Christ, if there's any consolation of love, if there's any fellowship of the spirit,18:18If any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intend on one purpose. Do nothing from selfish or empty conceit, but with humility of mind.18:41Let each of you regard one another as more important than himself. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. One of the beauty parts I've noticed since my time serving you as your intentional interim pastor is that when I met with the missions ministry team, which is one of my favorite teams, by the way, if I have to only do one meeting, that's the one I want to do.19:10Even above staff meeting. Well, maybe not. Yeah, for sure. Missions ministry team is a whole lot more fun because we're getting something done. I mean, not the staff's not getting anything done. Don't take me wrong on that. Let me back up just a second. Missions ministry team is because they're thinking externally outside. They're looking for a local mission project to do. And some of the things that I love, this forgotten initiative that we're involved in and the ministries that we're involved in there.19:38And this afternoon, we're kicking off the DR trip to the Dominican Republic to look out for the interests of others. That is a church that's on mission. Church, let me tell you something. Have this attitude. Do not for a look from selfish or empty conceit, but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself. Don't merely look out for your own personal interests, but the interests of others.20:05That's why believers should be of one mind and one spirit. What it means to be of one mind and one spirit is looking out for the interests of others. And how is constantly reminding ourselves that it's not about us. It is about those that have not yet come. My father was a phenomenal church man.20:33He was a long-term deacon. He was deacon emeritus at First Baptist Trustful when he passed away. Whatever that means. I'm not sure what deacon emeritus means. I think it means that you are a deacon, but you don't have to go to the meetings. And so he loved that because he said meetings are just a waste of time sometimes. And so my father, he was a retired Alabama Power Company man, 40 years. And he and mom were living their retired life there on Lake Street in Trustful where I grew up.21:03And First Trustful was in a, you know, that's a pretty good little church over there. Kind of a country church, but it's okay. And a buddy champion, Dr. Champion is a good friend of mine, pastors that church. I still have family members. They haven't run out yet from that church. And maybe if we continue to talk to them, they'll run them off. But they haven't run them off. And they're just a great church. And they were in the building campaign. They needed more facilities, not that they wanted them, but they were running out of space.21:29And they were in multiple services. And so they thought, well, it's time for us to launch in a building campaign. So they built them. They were going to build this huge worship center. If you've not been in it, it's beautiful. It's a nice facility. But it's a worship room. And so they were going to build this worship room. And so they got together. And the pastor at the time was Dr. Hollingsworth. Gary Hollingsworth, my good friend. He brought together all different groups. And they were talking, the building campaign, all that kind of stuff. And they were bringing all these different groups together.22:00And he finally said, you know, my last group to get together is not because I'm putting them last, but I value their input because of the strength and the wisdom that they have. He had a luncheon for all the senior adults that would come. Now, these are people that are retired and are money of them on fixed incomes. And so he said, I want them to share with them what we're going to do. So he had a big luncheon. And there was about 200 of them show up at the Fellowship Hall. And Brad, they were all there.22:29And the inevitable question and answering period came about. And the question and answering period came about. When they went through the question and answering period, Dr. Hollingsworth, they did the whole, you know, here's what we're going to do. Here's what the building's going to look like. And here's how we're going to do the campaign, the fundraiser. And, you know, they were already in debt, but they were going to add to the debt and all this kind of stuff. And it was several million dollars worth of facilities they needed to build. And they needed to raise a significant amount of money, Justin, before they could go to the bank and get an additional loan that they were paying.22:54And they're a financially solid church, 175 years old. And, I mean, they're a solid church. They could borrow the money with no problem whatsoever. But they wanted to get all this buy-in. So Dr. Hollingsworth is up there doing his best song and dance show in front of them. And he's doing all that. And so he asks the questions, and everybody's going, well, preacher, do you think we need, I don't know if we can afford this. And, boy, it's going to add this more debt and all this kind of stuff.23:21And my father did not tell me this story. Dr. Hollingsworth actually told me this story. My father had not spoken up in a business meeting or any kind of meeting like that in many, many years. He was Dinkin' Emeritus. He didn't even go to Dinkins' meeting. He just loved on people and took care of my mom. She was not well. And so he was just kind of there. And he had let the new generation come on board.23:48And he was supportive of that. He was a great churchman. My dad said, you know, Pastor, I need to say one thing. Hadn't said anything in a long time, but I got a couple of questions. Number one, do you think we really need this big a worship center? And the pastor said, Mr. Pat, I really think we do. I think it would be beneficial for us. We can grow. And the community is exploding.24:16I don't know if you've been over here lately, but you may live there now. He said, it's just incredible. When I moved to Trustful when I was a small child from the west part of the city, there wasn't but one red light in town in Trustful. Two stoplights, one red light. One elementary school, one middle school, one high school. We counted every dog, cat, and cattle, and there's 2,500 people over there. I'm telling you, we counted everybody that had a pulse. And one little Baptist church had about 50 people in it, Methodist church.24:46And that's when we moved to Trustful. And that's how small it was. And it had exploded at this time. Become a strong force for kingdom work. My dad said, do you think we need this big a worship center? And the pastor said, Mr. Pat, I believe we do. We've done the studies, I think. So he starts going through the whole. He said, no, no, don't try to sell me. I just ask a question. Do we really need this? He said, I think we do. He said, my second question is this. Do you feel like, as our senior shepherd, listening from God the Father,25:17do you believe that this is God's will for our church to build this facility? And the pastor stood up and said, Mr. Pat, I absolutely do. And my dad said, okay, folks, listen up. Hadn't said much in church in a long time. This is going to be the last time I say something. Most of us in this room are going to be dead and gone before we ever build the first building in this building. Most of us are going to die. We're going to go to it because we're old.25:46I mean, some of us are half-stepped into glory right now. We got one foot in heaven, the other foot on the ground. We're going to be in glory. It's not for us. It's for those that have not yet come. That's why we're building this. So I say, let's get on board. Folks, let me tell you something. When you say, Dan, why did you tell that story about your dad? Because in one sweep,26:16a group got behind that thing and started shifting their legacy, leaving resources and who they were going to leave their money to. And they left it to the New Testament church. And God's glory lived on. Because the church became one. One in spirit. Now, First Baptist Trustful is not a great church,26:45so don't leave here and go join. They got all they need over there. We need you here. Amen? If you're driving over from here to past the old Cahaba Valley Country Club, Trustful Country Club, you're driving too far to go to church. You need to stay right here. Amen? If you're driving from Trustful, thank you. We love you coming. Keep on coming. Amen? It's okay to come this way.27:15Absolutely. You see, what happened is, that's the why. That's the what. And that's the how, is that they united in one spirit, one truth, one scripture. Four characteristics, and we're done. Four characteristics of a submissive-minded person. Number one, a true Christ follower thinks of others and not himself. A true Christ follower27:46thinks of others and not himself. Turn with me back to Philippians chapter 2, verse 5 and 6. Have this attitude in yourselves, which is also in Christ Jesus, who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a bondservant and being made in the likeness of men. Folks, let me tell you something. We can expect unsaved people28:15unsaved people to act selfish, grasping for the things of this world. We do not expect Christ followers to act that way. We expect unsaved, lost people to be selfish. It's all about me and mine. We don't expect Christ followers to act that way. Why? Because that's the way the word is. I won't take the time to flip through every verse of scripture,28:44so in Romans chapter 12, beginning with the first, with the 10th verse, I want you to, let me just read this to you because it is so important for us. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. So we should be thinking of others and not ourselves. Paul writing to the church at Thessalonica, I love what he's talking about there. He's talking about edifying the body, edifying the brothers. Galatians 6 verse 2, bearing one another's29:14burdens. Romans chapter 4, don't be sitting in judgment. Admonishing, Romans chapter 15 verse 14, admonishing one another, encouraging one another, holding others accountable, holding one another's up. 20 times in the New Testament, it talks of us how to live for and how to live with each other. It is not just one or two one-off verses of Scripture. 20 times, the Bible rings the bell29:43telling us how to love one another, not oneself. Secondly, a true Christ follower serves others and not himself. Pick it up again in verse 7, but emptied himself, taking form, the form of a bondservant and being made in the likeness of men. the key is others. He emptied himself. He became human. He used that body as a servant. He took that body30:13to the cross. What grace do we see from heaven to earth, from glory to shame, from master to service, from life to death, even death on the cross. Church, let me tell you, that should guide an amen. A true Christ follower thinks of others and not himself. A true Christ follower serves others and not himself. Number three, a true Christ follower sacrifices for others and not himself. Verse 8, And being found in appearance30:42in appearance as a man, he humbled himself becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. Sacrifice and service go hand in hand if service is to be true Christian ministry. The test of a submissive minded Christ follower is not just how much we are willing to take in terms of suffering, but how much we are willing to give31:12to give in sacrifice. Sacrifice is never mentioned or never measured. Giving of oneself. Last year, I had a team of teenagers down in Honduras. on one of our groups. It was an amazing group from Texas. Partnered with a group from Peachtree City, Atlanta, Georgia. It was about 30 of us down there. It was a great, great team. On Wednesday, we gave them the option31:42we were going to have the lunch and we have our lunch prepares all through the week and it's all planned out. we were going to one of the orphanages that we work with, the Emanuel Orphanage and this orphanage, a lot of these children are struggling and they're doing their best to be fed and taken care of and we praise God for this orphanage and so the opportunity was that we could give sacrificially to this orphanage, not just to go present the gospel in Vacation Bible School form32:10and love on these children but one of the teenagers from Texas came up to me and the youth pastor, Jim Garner, and said, I really want us to pray about tomorrow going to the orphanage. I want to pray about us whatever the meal would cost for lunch. We want to sacrifice that meal and we want to give it to those orphaned children. Now folks, let me tell you something. When a teenager comes up and says that to me,32:40done. I know y'all can, I know that y'all are going to be shocked but I could possibly miss a meal and not hurt me whatsoever. Some of you are in the same shape that I'm in. But when teenagers do something like that, it brings us to the point of saying we are doing some wonderful things and growing our teenagers up. Brad is doing an amazing thing33:10to grow and to shape our teenagers for next generation church life. A true Christ follower sacrifices for others and not himself and finally a true Christ follower humbles himself and glorifies God to the end. Pick it up in verse 9. Therefore also God highly exalted him and bestowed upon him the name which is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow33:38and those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Church, let me tell you something. we will either confess Jesus Christ is Lord now but I'll assure you one day every knee shall bow. Every tongue34:09Every tongue shall confess those that voted for the debacle in the marriage act will confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Isaac will confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Chavez Adolf Hitler you name them every person34:38person will confess Jesus Christ is Lord. So folks let me tell you something it's time for us to get in practice as a true Christ follower to humble ourselves and confess Jesus Christ is Lord. One final verse and we close. 1 Peter chapter 5 and verse35:07and verse 6 the Bible says humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God. so that at the proper time he may install you casting all your anxiety or cares one translation says on him because he cares for you for stressed out35:37stressed out about job stressed out about work stressed out about life stressed out about health cast all your cares on him because he cares for you.
