Thank you, Greg. Greg has more than a full-time job, and he still manages to lead us in worship, and so we thank him so much for his time and his efforts, and along with the choir, too.0:28You guys are awesome. John chapter 11. John chapter 11 is where we're going to be at most of the time, and then we may skip around a little bit. When Dan, I knew Dan was going to be out, actually, several months ago, and I've been contemplating about this particular message, and whenever I prepare a message for either our students, or maybe even an event or a men's retreat that maybe I might speak at,0:57I always try to get a feel for what's going on in the life of that body. With our students, I kind of know what's going on there and everything, and so I try my very best to kind of lean toward messages that I know that's going to help them in their stage in their life. And so with the church as a body, I've been praying, I've been thinking, okay, Lord, what kind of message can you give me, Lord,1:26that will either encourage them or slap them around? And if you have ever heard me before, I do a lot of slapping. And people have told me that over the years. Brad, you're tough, man. You're going to lighten up a little bit. And I think as I've had children, I have a little bit. Every now and then I may go off on our students sometimes when I feel like that they need it. But it's really an interesting thing to sit and think about.1:54Man, I have to deliver a message that I feel like that the Lord leads me to give. And so I really feel like that over the past couple of months especially, there's been a lot of questions about things. If you've listened to the news, if you see what's going on in the world, and then there's so many different things going on in our congregation that's happening. And so there's a question. There's a question that we ask ourself a lot.2:25And that question is, why did God allow that to happen? Why did God allow that to happen? How many of you have ever asked that question before? Why did God allow that to happen? Come on, hold on my high. Why did God allow that to happen? If you're not raising your hand, you probably don't understand the question or you're lying. One of the two. Because I think we've all asked that question at one point in time or another in our life.2:52Why did God allow that to happen? You may be watching the news and you go, man, why did God allow that to happen? It may be something in your life that's going on. It may be a... You may be sitting next to that thing that happened to you. Some of you guys don't really... You may get that later. Some of you are getting nudges right now and you're like, what happened? So some of you may be sitting next to that thing that happened.3:21The interesting thing about that is that you don't have to think really hard to come up with that thing. You don't really have to think really hard. There's family issues. There's that relationship. There's your job. Maybe that thing is your boss. Maybe you're looking for a job. Maybe you're looking for a place to go as far as a church congregation. And you're kind of praying about that. Because maybe you're just disenfranchised with the church that you come from.3:52And so there's all kind of things that that might be. And then we have more serious things. More serious things, stuff like illnesses. Things going on around the world. Disease, terrorism. And then there's loss of life. And we ask that question. God, why did that? Have to happen. And when it becomes personal to you, that becomes a big question.4:17When it becomes very personal to us, it becomes a really large question. Now, I don't know anyone that wants a bad life. I have never really met anyone that says, Man, I just want a horrible, bad life. I want to suffer my entire life. I've never met anybody like that. Okay, and I don't know if you have or not either. Now, maybe some people out there are like that. And if that's you, go down to the courthouse and wait in line for a little while.4:46And you'll suffer. And so I've never met anyone that just wants to suffer. And so all you have to do is live life for a little while. Live life for a little while. And guess what? You will go through things in your life that will cause you to ask that question. Why did God allow that to happen? And one thing I want to establish early in this message is that God's a good God. He is a good God.5:17He is an awesome God. And do you know that God wants you to have a good life? Because I'm going to be honest with you, when I'm reading over scripture sometimes, and I listen to preachers, listen to pastors, and even church culture sometimes, it almost seems like that we kind of communicate that God wants to get you. Sometimes that gets kind of translated. God wants to get you. He's standing up here.5:47And if you do X, Y, or Z, man, he's going to zap you. He's going to zap you. And so I want you to understand that God is a good God. There's consequences to things that we do. There's consequences to those things. And guess what? That thing in your life may be because of a consequence of something that you did as far as your sin is concerned. But God's a good God. He's good all the time. As a matter of fact, in John 10, 10, it says this.6:17You don't have to turn there. Look at that. It says, the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. And so God is a good God that wants good for the life of his children. And some of you may be asking the question, how can God, how can I call God good when things are so bad right now in my life? How can I do that, Brad? How can I call God good when things are so bad in my life?6:45And guess what? I can understand that. A lot of people in this room can't understand that question. Because it's really easy to call God a healer until we really need healing. It's really easy to say that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me when we7:04really have to do something. And so it's really easy to say, God, why did that happen?7:17It's easy for us to ask that question. Here's one key statement I want you to get today. If you don't get anything else today, here's one key statement. It took me a while to come up with this, so just write it down.7:44If that, if that thing in your life is bad, if that thing in your life is bad, God's not done. As a matter of fact, I want you to turn to the person next to you and say, if that thing in your life is bad, God's not done. Say it. Come on, turn. If that thing in your life is bad, God's not done.8:12He's not done. And so we're going to look at this and we're going to see what I actually mean by that. It may be your marriage. It may be your job. It may be family. It may be parents. It may be health. And I believe that we can't even begin to understand why God allows that to happen. We can't. We can't really understand the reasons why God allows those things to happen. And it could drive us crazy trying to figure it out.8:42It really could. Trying to understand and figure out why the trials come, why those circumstances come, why those things happen, why the situations arise. But God says we don't have to understand. Proverbs 3, 5 through 6 says, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean on, not your own understanding. In all your paths, in all your ways, acknowledge him and he'll direct your paths.9:07So there's some things that we just really are not going to understand. We just kind of have to accept and go, you know what, this is kind of where I'm at right now. And a lot of you know what I'm talking about. So we're going to look at a story. And I do believe this. Jesus is concerned about this question. Jesus is very concerned about this question. Why did God allow that to happen? Why did God allow that to happen? He's concerned about it. He actually created a scenario in God's word.9:36He created this drama that we could look at and we could say, you know what, I see what he did here. And now I can have faith when life goes bad. John 11, chapter 1. Now let me just say this. Let me preface this. All of you in this room probably haven't heard this story. If you've heard this story, I want you to pretend for a minute you haven't ever heard this story. Okay? And so some of you may not have heard this story. It's the story of Lazarus, the story of Jesus raising him from the dead.10:05And so we're going to go with this. John 11, verse 1. It says, Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, in the village of Mary and his sister Martha. And then he kind of goes through this little commentary about who Mary was because there's so many different Marys in the Bible. It says, It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, he who you love is ill.10:30Now I want to stop right there for a second. The sisters sent word to Jesus. Jesus was about two miles away from Bethany. And so it was kind of a long walk there. As a matter of fact, I'm sorry, it was a day and a half away. It was a day and a half away. And so this is what you're looking at here. Now he could have, Jesus could have said, You know, that's great and all.10:59And I understand that Lazarus is sick, because guess what? He is the Lord. He knows that he's sick. But it's really interesting that he says this. The Holy Spirit gives us an inclination here that, Lord, he who you love is ill. He who you love is ill. How would you like to be known as the person that Jesus loved?11:30Can you name him? He said, Lord, the one that you love is ill. And they did exactly what most of us should do when we have a problem. And that's go to Jesus. They took the problem to Jesus. So that's what they're doing there. Verse 4 says, but when Jesus heard it, he said, this illness does not lead to death. Now let me just pause there for a second. That's good news if you're the messenger. So the messenger busts in on Jesus, and the disciples are sitting there,11:59and he says, hey, the one you love is ill. And Jesus said, this illness will not lead to death. And if you're the messenger, man, that's good news. That's really good news. And then in the second part of verse 4, it says, it. I want you to look at it for a second. It is for the glory of God. It. What is it? The sickness. That's the sickness. So that. So that. That's a purpose statement.12:29The Son of God may be glorified through it. So it is for the glory of God. So that the Son of God may be glorified through it. So you may ask the question, God, why is Lazarus sick? And the answer to that question in that verse is, for my glory. For my glory. Jesus is about to give us light in a dark place. And hope where you don't think that there is any hope. He's about to give these disciples that.12:59And in verse 5, it says, now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. And Jesus, Jesus didn't just know them. He loved them. And I'm so glad that John put that there because we doubt God's love sometimes. Especially in a very difficult situation. We doubt him sometimes. And we have those doubts. And we have those questions that we have. And so in verse 6, it says, so when he had heard that Lazarus was13:27ill, he stayed two days longer in a place where he was. Now I want to pause right there. This verse is just strange to me. He just heard that the one that he loved was ill, was sick. And this is what it says. It said, so when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed. How many more days? Two more days in a place where he was.13:55Now I want you to think about this for a second. I kind of come up with a little scenario here. Think about it this way. Jesus and his disciples are eating lunch. Probably Peter wraps. They may, you can't say that they did or they didn't. Okay? I have the mic. So you really can't write down. I don't know about Peter wraps. Okay? Let's just say there's Peter wraps. And Jesus was just about to bite into his Peter wrap. And all of a sudden, this messenger busts in the room and says, hey, Lazarus, the one14:22that you love is sick. And Jesus said, hey, it's okay. This illness will not pass in death. And Jesus sits back down, has Peter, hey, Peter, pass the image dip. And everybody's going, Jesus, aren't we going to, Lazarus is sick. Yeah. I know. Aren't we going to, are we going to go? No. Matter of fact, I'm probably going to read a book after we're done.14:51Stay there for two more days. A strange verse. To me, when we read that, it's kind of like, is Jesus being insensitive? Is he, what's happening there? It says, then after this, after those two days, he said to the disciples, okay, let's go. Let's go to Judea again. Now, this is really interesting. This tells the humanity of our disciples here. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you.15:18And are you going there again? Now, here's what that translates to. The Jews may stone you, and one of those stones may hit us. And so, I just don't know about going back over there because I don't think it's a good idea. So, the disciples are going, you know, you can go, but one of those stones may hit us.15:46And so, the disciples really, they just really didn't want to go. And this is what Jesus said. And this is just, this is just awesome. It says, are there not 12 hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of the world. Verse 10, it says, but if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.16:13What he's saying is our time is short. My time is short. As a matter of fact, he's looking at those disciples going, hey, my time is short here on this earth. And I'm about to go show you something. As a matter of fact, I'm about to go show you that when I'm gone, in a short while, when I'm gone, what I'm about to do is going to give you hope when there's darkness.16:42What I'm about to do here is going to give you life when there's darkness. As a matter of fact, I'm going to give you a candle when I'm gone. And I'm going to show you the hope.17:07Now, verse 11 says, after saying these things, he said to them, one of our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go in and wake him. And then this is really cool. Verse 12, the disciples said to him, Lord, if he's fallen asleep, he will recover. In other words, hey, he's going to be okay. We don't want to get stoned. And hey, he's going to wake up. The fever's going to break. He's going to be okay. And so they're giving Jesus medical advice. How many of us have ever done that before?17:36I mean, so that you may believe. Verse 15 says, and for your sake, I'm glad that I was not there. So that you may believe. Let's back up. Verse 13 says, now Jesus has spoken to his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest and sleep. And Jesus had to be very blunt with them in verse 14. And Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Lazarus is dead.18:06And verse 15 is probably one of those most insensitive verses. If we look at this and really, really, really grab the gravity of this. It says, and for your sake, I'm glad that I was not there. Now that's Jesus. For your sake, I'm glad that I was not there. I'm glad that I did not, that I wasn't there to console Mary and Martha. I'm glad that I wasn't there for the funeral of Lazarus.18:35Hey, I'm glad I wasn't there to heal him. How about that one? I'm glad I wasn't there. So that, purpose statement again, so that you may believe. You may believe, but let us go to him. And so Thomas, called the twins, said to his disciples. Now this Thomas is really an interesting character. Let us also go that we may die with him.19:06You ever seen Winnie the Pooh? Anybody like Winnie the Pooh? You know Eeyore? That's Thomas. That's Thomas. I mean, this is what he's doing. Okay. We're going to get stoned. You know, we're late. We're going to be embarrassed. Let us also go that we may die with him.19:35Let us also go that we may die with him.19:45Verse 17. And when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Four days. Four days. Can you imagine how embarrassing this was for the disciples to show up four days late? That's like getting invited to the Christmas Eve dinner and showing up for New Year's going, Merry Christmas! I'm here now. They're late. They had sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was ill.20:14Mary and Martha were caring for their brother. And they're thinking that Jesus is coming. I want you guys to realize that. They're thinking that Jesus is going to be there. I mean, could you imagine? They're consoling other people and their friends are consoling us that Jesus is coming. He's going to be here. We sent word. He's going to be here. As a matter of fact, he told the messenger that this death would not end in illness. This illness would not live in death.20:43And so they're waiting there and their friends are saying, no, he's coming. As a matter of fact, they're probably out on the road going, okay, anytime now, he's going to be here. And they have to bury him. And they have to bury him. To do the funeral. There's still no Jesus. He's not there. So what Jesus walks in on is hopelessness. Absolute hopelessness.21:13Absolute hopelessness. They have no hope there. If you skip down to verse 20. So when Martha heard that Jesus is coming, she went to him and met him. But Mary remained seated at the house. Why do you think Mary remained seated at the house? Because she was mad. Let's just be honest. She was mad.21:43Jesus hadn't came. So Martha ran out. Mary stayed home. How many of you have ever been mad? Let's just be honest with each other, people. How many of you have been mad at God? You've been upset. That didn't work out.22:05Verse 21. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And so both Mary and Martha had this dialogue. Going back and forth all the way down to verse 32. They have this dialogue with Jesus going kind of back and forth. And then all of a sudden, Martha goes back and gets Mary. And so now when Mary came out in verse 32, when Mary came out to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.22:30Here's the question. Why did God allow that to happen? That's what they're asking. Why? Why did God allow that to happen? Lord, why did you allow this to happen? Verse 33, it says, When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews had come with her weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, where have you laid him?23:00And they said to him, Lord, come and see. And John records something amazing. Absolutely amazing. It shows the humanity of our Lord. And it shows that our Lord wants to meet us where we're at in our suffering. It shows us that the Lord wants to interact with us. It shows us that the Lord is always with us. One verse.23:30One verse. Jesus wept. Jesus wept. Why was he weeping? Because he's not distant. And in your suffering, he understands. See, oftentimes in periods of hopelessness like this, we think that God is distant. And we can't feel him.23:59We don't know. Man, I just don't understand why I can't. There's this distance that's going on here, and I just don't understand. And sometimes, this is where stress and anxiety and depression comes from. When we ask this question, why did God allow that to happen? And we get so consumed in the question. Why did God allow that to happen? And Jesus is going, I'm here. I'm here.24:29So the Jews said, see how he loved them. In verse 37, you have some of those other Jews that were basically trying to say that Jesus wasn't who he was. But some of them said, could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying? There it is again. Why did God allow that to happen? Then Jesus deeply moved again, came to the tomb.24:59And it was a cave and a stone lay against it. And Jesus said, take away the stone. And Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, by this time there is an odor, for he has been dead for four days. Four days! You think that's a stab? Lord, he's been dead for four days. Four days. Now, there's some different stories about the burial of Lazarus.25:23Bethany is a very interesting city. And there's a lot of different, I guess you'd say, variations of the burial process. And I'm going to kind of touch on two of those. One is that they gave him a very customary Jewish burial. And the belief is that after the third day, around the third day, that the spirit hovers around the body.25:49And after that third day, it goes away. And the person is dead. That is the very traditional Jewish Old Testament type of theory. And here's another theory. It's a very recent theory that you can read about. You can look up. I can send you the information if you want. The area of Bethany was settled by Egyptians.26:16As a matter of fact, they were kind of mingled with Egyptian type of culture. And so, in other words, a lot of the burial sites they have found in Bethany were actually mummified bodies. Very interesting. And so, the question is, could it be that during the burial process of Lazarus, they mummified him? Let me explain what that means. They take out your heart. They take out your tongue, your eyes, and your brain.26:47You're dead. Okay? You're pretty dead. And so, you have all these different people who say, no, he was just asleep. Maybe he just, you know. And so, this to me, whether or not you believe either one of those, we really don't know. But we do know that he was dead. And so, four days. Jesus said something amazing. Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?27:18You'd see the glory of God. See, this is where it gets hard for us in taking God at his word. It gets hard for us sometimes to take God at his word and say, you know, I know that you are Lord of my life. I know that this is a season of my life. Whether it be the suffering that you're going through. I don't know what everybody's going through in here, but some of you are going through some tough stuff.27:47Some of you are like, man, man, I'm cool right now. I'm okay. Well, there may be a season. And so, we have a hard time sometimes taking God at his word. Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? Verse 41. So they took away the stone. So they. I want to know who they were. Let's look at verse 41.28:17Very first part of verse 41. So they took away the stone. Who were they? We can speculate. And who did they? You don't want to know who I believe it was? I believe it's a couple of people that were there. Probably some disciples. That actually took him at his word. Took him at his word. Think about it this way. You're a disciple, and all of a sudden, you're like, I'm going to take God at his word. Because you know what? I was at a wedding party.28:47And they ran out of wine. Completely out of wine. And so, Jesus made gallons of wine out of water. And you know, a few days later, we was at this dinner on the ground thing. You know? And everybody out there, everybody was hungry. They're really hungry. And so, they kind of kidnap this little Jewish boy.29:15Had lunch. They took his lunch from him. And all of a sudden, he fed thousands, 5,000 people. And you know what? There was this time when we, the disciples left, and they went on this boat. And Jesus didn't even need a boat. And he walked out on water to them. Walked on water. Then all of a sudden, they ended up, and there's this man that had leprosy. And Jesus just touched him.29:44Just touched him. And his leprosy was gone. And then there was this other time when there was this blind man, had been blind from birth. And I seen Jesus heal this blind man, and he could see. So, I'm just wondering what he's about to do. So, I'm going to take him at his word. I'm going to take him at his word. And so, they took away the stone. They took away the stone. We don't always understand what he's about to do.30:15But we need to take him at his word. Verse 41, the last part. Second part. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. Verse 42 says, I knew that you always hear me. But I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me. Verse 43 is really important because this is the one. He said these things, and he cried out in a loud voice,30:43Lazarus, come out. As a matter of fact, there's an exclamation point there. Lazarus, come out! And everybody's standing. And they're wondering. And they're waiting. They're waiting. The man who died came out. His hands and feet bound with linen strips. His face wrapped with a cloth.31:11Jesus said, Unbind him. Let him go. Verse 45 says, Many of the Jews, therefore, who came up with Mary had seen what he did and believed in him. Believed in him. There's a whole lot of other speculation of what happened to Lazarus after that. Some really neat things that some commentaries have come up with historically. One of my favorites is that Lazarus became basically a pastor type of person.31:41And they named a little area after him. And everybody wanted to kill Lazarus. Kind of go figure. Jesus raised him from the dead. That was proof. So everybody wanted to kill him. And it's said that what he would do is he would hide in tombs from the people that wanted to kill him. Because who wants to look for someone in a tomb other than the guy that's already been there? They've been risen from the dead.32:12So I want to ask you some questions. Was Lazarus getting sick good? Come on. I want some interaction. Was Lazarus getting sick good? Think about it. Was Lazarus getting sick good? Let me put it to you this way. My wife gets sick. Is it good? Is it good?32:42My wife gets sick. Is it good? Am I going to think it's good? No! I'm not going to think it's good. Was Mary and Martha waiting on Jesus to get their good? No, it wasn't good. It wasn't good for them at the time, at the moment. It wasn't good. Was them having to console their dying brother good at the time?33:07No. Was Lazarus dying to them good? No. It wasn't. Was them having to bury Lazarus without Jesus being there? Good. No. Was Jesus being four days late good to them? No. It's not good. In our circumstances that we go through, those things aren't good.33:35But all of those things, listen to me, all of those bad things, all of those things that we say no to, work together. Resulted in a dead man being raised from the dead. Romans 8, 28. Turn there. Romans 8, 28. God takes the bad and makes it good.34:03Amen? God takes the bad and he makes it good. We may not see it in our circumstances. We have to walk through those bad things. We have to have the sorrow. We have to have that suffering. But in the end, this is what Romans 8, 28 says. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good. For those who are called according to his purpose. See, God is not always going to change your circumstances like he did for the story of Lazarus.34:36Some of you are going to walk out of here. Look at me. Some of you are going to walk out of here and you're going to still be in the same circumstances that you were in when you walked in. Some of you are going through maybe a divorce. Maybe it's a family member that's gone astray. Maybe it's a son that's gone wayward. Maybe you're dealing with the death of a family member. And that's tough. It hurts. And so your circumstances may not change.35:09But God. But God. He works things out. Here's my last question. How do we live in our circumstances and still live in freedom and joy? How do we do that? How do we live in our circumstances and still live in freedom and joy? How do we do it? How does that happen? Let me give you some examples here.35:37The apostle Paul had to have been the most frustrating individual for those that were enemies of the gospel. I'm going to kill you, Paul. That's fine. Today's game. Paul, we're going to stone you, beat you, and throw you in the water, in the ocean. And he goes, yeah, it's okay.36:08Because this present suffering is going to pass. And the glory that's coming is much greater. It's okay. So where's, what water are you throwing me in? Really? I mean, it's the most frustrating to those that were enemies. But it's the most free. It's the most freeing. Okay, we're going to throw you into the jail. And we're just going to let you stay there.36:40He sings worship songs. And the guards get saved. I mean, how freeing is that? You try to beat the guy. You throw him in jail, and he's singing worship songs. Some of us go through things, and we struggle. Let's look at Moses.37:09Moses had to deal with probably the most stubborn people on the face of the earth for 40 years. They mumbled. They groaned. They complained constantly. So he had to walk with them for 40 years. And then all of a sudden, God takes him up on this mountain. And he's promised that they will go to the promised land. So God takes him up on this mountain. And God parts the clouds and says, look, Moses, the promised land.37:39And Moses goes, that's good. Milk and honey. That is awesome. And God goes, you're going to die on this mountain. You're not going to see it. What? Really? And so here's what we have to do as believers. Here's the way I kind of work this out in my life.38:08For some of us, our story may be the desert. For some of us, the story may be the desert. It's like, you know, that was Moses' deal. It was the desert. And he was okay with it. So here's how I work this out in my life.38:37See, I come from a long line, a long bloodline of wickedness. So when I got saved, the Lord did a work in my life. And sometimes I still have to put to death those things that I struggle with. And so I have to walk through these things. And I'm like, you know, Lord, I pray every day, Lord, pray for my sons. Pray for my boys. And my hope is that as I go through this desert, they will get to see the promised land.39:06They won't have to struggle with maybe what I've struggled with. They won't have to go through with the things that I've gone through. So that's my hope for them. And that should be our hope for future generations. So if I'm Moses, I'm going, okay. My part's the desert. My part's the desert.39:36If you look at the letters, if you look at Jeremiah, he was beaten every time he spoke of the Lord, of God, and he was thrown in a ditch. If you look at all the different prophets and everything, some of them went through so many different grueling things, but they still had joy in their lives.40:05So one of my favorites is Stephen. Stephen is getting hit with stones, and he looks up. And as he's dying, he sees the Lord. He sees Jesus. Jesus is not sitting down. He's standing. It's one of the most beautiful scenes of Jesus standing, waiting on him to come on. You think it was bad for Stephen?40:33At the moment, it probably was. But he counted it joy. Here's what those guys got. Here's what they got. We may ask all these questions. They got Jesus. In the end, we get Jesus. The suffering that we go through. In the end, we get Jesus.
