we will depart from our summer wisdom series so for those of you who have your book your bibles marked in proverbs sorry um but what a wonderful journey it's been in proverbs god give us wisdom that only comes from your from your son from the fear of the lord we are going to be in a very common well understood biblical0:29text this morning first samuel 17 so if you have your bibles with you please join me there in first samuel this is a text that believers know well this is a bible story that our kids know well and this is a story that those who do not believe in god also know well so god's word is going to challenge us0:54this morning in this regard that we are to be people that have faith and i know i say that in a church setting and most of us would would would stand up or raise our hand and say well pastor i have faith right i have faith is trust or confidence in someone or something and so we say well i have faith in god that's why i'm here worshiping but that's not necessarily true1:22but i think god's word pushes us deeper than just saying we have faith that god's word commands us to have faith that's disruptive to our lives because if we're honest with ourselves and if we pull back the fabric of our lives most often we pray and say lord give me what i need and really when we pray that we say lord give me what i want so lord i want jesus christ to make me a little better than i am or i want1:45jesus christ to make my life a little better than it is and often jesus christ disrupts our life in a way that we never thought possible and so i challenge you just to pray as we begin this morning god give me a faith that will disrupt my life that if my life is is on this trajectory that lord your faith in you will change it that's why jesus christ says take up your cross and follow me and taking up your cross as a2:12disruption of our lives that we may have faith that others see and turn to that's what we see here in first samuel 17 first samuel 17 the story and i'm specifically not saying the name because you would know what it is if i say it first samuel 17 is is not about a man who has courage it's not necessarily about victory or being strategic in battle it is about a man who has faith2:41in the saving grace of the lord and his name is david so we're going to look this morning at at david and may our prayer be god give us grace that we may have faith that changes our lives not faith to say make me better than i am but a faith that says making me a new creation old things have passed behold new things have come join me in verse 4 first samuel 17 in the old testament3:08verse 4 and a champion went out from camp of the philistines named goliath from gath whose height was six cubits and a span and so if you don't really count things by cubits and you say well how tall is that at a minimum eight feet possibly nine and a half to ten feet so let's say he's short goliath is eight feet tall3:37now this is not an overblown story by the way everything in god's word is true this is accurate historically accurate verse five he had a bronze helmet on his head he was armed with a coat of mail and the weight of his coat was five thousand shekels of bronze he had a bronze armor on his legs and bronze javelin between his shoulders now the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels and a shield shield bearer went before him and he stood and he cried out to4:05the armies of israel and said why have you come out to line up for battle am i not a philistine you servants of saul choose a man for yourself and let him come down to me to fight let's pray father we desire to be a people lord not who proclaim that we have faith but that we desire to be people this4:26morning that have a faith that disrupts our life that when our fears and when our struggles intersect our faith that our faith in jesus christ disrupts and drives out fear or may that be who we are known for father open our minds stir our hearts and put action to our feet in our hands4:50to live out our faith that we may not be hearers only but that we will be doers of your holy scriptures and we pray this in jesus name amen lord give us disruptive faith verse four so the first thing that we need when we say god disrupt my life by your grace and by your faith we need to beware of champions in our life beware of champions and specifically beware of things that you've already5:19given victory to beware of things that that you and i give victory to look at verse four a champion and went out from gath of the philistines now about four verses here are given to the physical makeup and characteristic of goliath this is very highly unusual in the biblical text we rarely get any physical5:40description of what's our physical description of god anyone want to give a wrong answer we do we have little right moses asked he said lord let me see your face and and the lord says i will hide you in the cleft of the rock and you will see my back and it radically changed moses life think about that the the back of god seeing the back of god6:10transforms our life what physical description do we have of jesus christ i'll give you a hint he's not blonde hair and blue eyes as we see often in our in our literature in our in our paintings we have a small verse in isaiah that said there he is he is comely there is nothing earthly attractive to him that we will not be attracted to his form actually his form was marred and scarred by the cross6:39of jesus christ luke 5 2 says that he grew he grew he grows unto the lord in wisdom and statue of and god and man but that's all we have why out of anyone in the whole bible that we should have a physical picture of would it not be god or jesus christ so when we get that the bible is pressing us and saying listen to this see this and we have four verses given to goliath why goliath7:05and why is he called a champion it's interesting we see that saul is from the tribe of benjamin in the hebrew is ben yamin and now listen to this ben yamin right saul the king who is head and shoulders above everyone that's why he's chosen king because he looks strong he is from ben yamin and we have this champion in hebrew it is ben ayin this champion challenging god's king and the king hides and7:32soaks now how do we apply that to our life it's important for us to notice that we need to be very careful at who we proclaim as champions and we need to be very careful what we give victory to in our life so i ask you to look at verse 4 again a champion went out from the camp why is goliath the champion7:55and whose perspective is he champion now this is god's word and so of course this is written and inspired by the lord but this is not god's champion and we know that david did not write this because david would not have written goliath was a champion david would have written this is a man who8:23insulted the lord our god he deserves to die i think there are times in our life where we look at obstacles and we look at weights in our life and we look at struggles and before we wake up we've already given them victory we wake up and we say lord you know i struggle with this sin and you know what i'm it's just it's going to master me today lord is this a champion over me lord you know i struggle8:47i know i have power but as a champion over and over again god's people looked at goliath and for 40 days he insulted god's people and they ran away this is not faith this is fear and struggle and often in our life where sin abounds intimidation and fear abounds have you ever noticed that about your life9:12that maybe you're struggling with sin or fear and the first thing that it makes you do it makes you suspicious that's what sin makes you suspicious sin makes you so you can't celebrate god's work in other people's lives it makes you suspicious of others it makes you jealous of others and then it makes you suspicious of others motivations because you're struggling and we will not give it over but if we look at our struggles and we say god it is yours we don't have to claim that our struggles9:41are champions of our lives actually in jesus christ we have victory over our sin we have victory over our struggles we have victory over our difficulties this is the power of jesus christ a champion went out from the camp of the philistines nine feet tall his spear was the size of a weaver's beam the end of the10:04the spear was 15 pounds and he insulted god's people daily the word champion means the one who stands in the middle and as they are on either side of the valley of elah and there's a wadi the hebrew wadi means a brook that's dry this person challenges god and he challenges god's people daily so i ask you this10:28morning most of us have come in here with some type of weight with some type of fear with some type of struggle and you might not call it goliath but you might you might know that you have come in here and you are struggling and you know tomorrow that you're going to meet that same struggle face to face may we not be people who give up or run away in the sight of our struggles but may we be people who10:57look at our struggles our champions and we say you are no champion in god's eyes my champion you know the cross was enough the cross was i love the refrain of that song beware of your champions and i encourage you just to to close your eyes and just spend some time with the lord right now say god where are my fears if i'm honest god where do i struggle god if i'm honest where are my weights the things that that11:26hinder me the things that slow me down god what is the thing that is standing in between the champion that is standing between you and where i should be in you god remove the champions that i have set up and give me victory over those champions the answer to our dark champions is a disruptive faith may we have a faith that disrupts our fears this morning11:50god give us that give us victory give us victory over our fears verse 16 and the philistines drew near and presented himself 40 days morning and evening 40 days then jesse said to his son david take now for your brothers and ephah of this dry grain and these 10 loaves and run to your12:15your brothers at the camp carry these 10 cheeses to the captain of their thousands and see how your brothers fare and bring back news of them now saul and they and all of the men of israel were in the valley of elah fighting with the philistines now there's there's some irony there right so let's not miss this so the bible says that the people they were fighting the philistines were they really fighting12:43here's the fight right you know it's like it's like guys really do we i would say kids but really guys do this where we bow up to each other and we get a friend and say hold on to me real quick and we say you're good you know you're glad my friend's holding me back i beat you down and then we tell our friend don't let me go right that's that's the fight here right god's people the bible says that13:05they are going they're not really fighting they are going to this wadi this dried brook and that they see this man that is incredibly imposing and they back down and they say god we can't fight and before we point our fingers and say i can't believe they didn't have faith we know how the story ends but it doesn't take faith to know how the story ends it takes faith to get through that13:30let's keep pressing in god's word verse 20 so david arose early in the morning and he left the sheep with the keeper so circle or underline left the sheep that's important and he took the things and he went as jesse had commanded him and he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting of the battle so there was more shouting than fighting13:58this was a great drama unfolding god's people here they're trying to conquer the promised land and the philistines are invading on the promised land so they can't get to where god wants them to be because there's an obstacle there sound familiar and yet we are encouraged to lay aside the hindrances that we have in our life so the second answer to having a faith that is disruptive a faith that gives victory one is to14:28beware the things that you've already given victory to in your life two lay aside the things that now hinder that's what god's word commands us to do lay aside those things you say well pastor what what might those things be because often in our life besides sin there are others that there are other obstacles that we struggle with the number one thing i believe that we struggle with is responsibility some of us do not serve the lord because we have this word that's called busyness14:58and we say lord you know you know i would serve you but i'm just too busy lord you you know i would serve you you lord i know you've given us given me this talent but i just can't do my life's too busy right now and i believe sometimes god laughs at my excuses and he says josh don't you realize i gave you your talents and josh don't you realize i created the time that you have and josh don't you realize if you15:27serve me i could make the sun stand still so josh what are your excuses we said well lord i have to be responsible god i can't serve you fully i can't walk the path of righteousness i can't get involved as much as i need to be lord i can't do kingdom work because i have not just busyness but adults right we're going to get in adulthood now responsibility15:53look what david does with responsibility in his life verse 16 as the philistines drew near jesse verse 17 said to his son david take now for your brothers food cheese and grain responsibility right we also know that david is a shepherd responsibility we also know that when david wants to go fight and this is in16:19verse 39 when david goes to fight saul finally gives up and says okay fine if you want to fight here's my armor and david says i can't fight in this it's too large and over and over and over again we see david do this with responsibility he delivers the food he lays aside the sheep and he takes off the clothes now david does not shirk the responsibility or ignore16:48the responsibility that he has in his life rather david delegates or takes care of the responsibility that he might serve the lord and forbid it for us to say god we are too busy we cannot serve god you know i have to do this i can't serve you david would say no lay aside that17:17you know why we have this story in the bible i believe it could have taken another turn what would happen if david had gone in saul's clothes with 20 sheep with food in his hands think about think about the picture if david would have taken the responsibility he had said lord i'm going to serve you but sheep come on right i have these clothes and now he has in his right hand cheese and he has in his left hand grain the responsibility that he was given what would he17:46do with the stone that god had called him to sling and i believe there are times in our life that we come to god with a full plate and we say god here i am i'm going to serve you and god says no i want you to lay that stuff aside first and responsibility is not a sinful thing necessarily or a bad thing but if it hinders me from serving god it is not righteous18:11and may we be people who say lord prioritize my life that i may not value busyness over my savior that i may not value my responsibility over finding victory that is in the cross of jesus christ lay aside responsibilities that hinder us but not only responsibility do we see that we have to lay aside and many of you find this daily in your life and is a constant struggle look at verse 2718:39and you can go back and look at that but david leaves a sheep with another shepherd a hired hand that that is responsible verse 27 the people answered him and said this way so shall it be done for the man who kills him so david asked hey army what happens for the man who kills goliath and they answer him hey you19:06get to marry the king's daughter apparently she was beautiful and along with the beauty of micah michael we have um responsibility in the palace youth we get you know you get unlimited wi-fi in the palace you have people in the palace where you snap your finger and they bring you grapes and and they19:36fan you with palm fronds think about the life if you desired a life of luxury you would want to be in the palace and this is all that will be given to the man who kills him verse 28 now aliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the man aliab's anger was aroused against david and he said why did you come down here and with whom have you left those few sheep as older brothers have a way with words in the20:04wilderness i know your pride and the insolence of your heart for you have come down to see the battle so here the oldest brother now offers an insult to david now the older three brothers are in battle which tells us they're above the age of 20. so we don't know how old david is but he's younger than 20 probably a teenager and he comes to give his brother food he's asking questions and the older brother20:34says i know your heart and the truth of the broken world that we live in is that when you decide to live for jesus christ there will be relationships in your life that hinder you from serving the lord there are people in our lives that when we say i'm going to follow christ they say how i know you're not doing it for the right reasons i know your heart and what did you do about those little sheep21:02not because they're they're tiny sheep but you only had three you weren't even a good shepherd and can you imagine your older brother berating you constantly saying how dare you even ask that question get back home you don't belong here and oftentimes in our life when we seek the lord we will have relationships in our life that hinder us from serving hinder us from walking paths of righteousness21:30and the answer to that is to turn aside as david does or lay aside those but here is the promise in scripture when the world says we know your heart you're conceited you're selfish god says this and this is in first samuel 13 14 listen to these words soul has now turned his back on the lord and so the lord gives samuel the charge of finding the new king21:57and he says this the lord has sought for himself a man after his own heart and the lord has commanded him to be commander over his people because you have not kept what the lord commanded you this is four chapters before what we're reading today and do you know the man that god calls a man22:21after his own heart a young teenager the son of jesse named david and i think the promise of scripture for us today is this when the world and it might be your parents it might be someone you are in a romantic relationship with it might be your your brother or sister that you are trying to walk passive righteousness and they are looking at you right now and they're saying we know your heart you selfish22:51prideful arrogant lacking responsibility person when they say i know your heart god says no they don't god says give my give your heart to me and you will be a man a woman after my own heart and maybe this morning god is calling us to live a life of faith a life of disruptive faith that there are relationships that we walked in this room with23:17that we now have to turn aside from and david did not disbrother his brother if that's even a word he did not say i can't believe you're talking to me like that you're no longer my brother what we see in scripture he just verse 30 he turns aside so for our enemies for our struggles that does not mean that we have to to spit at them to curse them but god might be calling us to lay aside those things this morning as his scripture says in hebrews23:4712 now that we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us lay aside the weights and the sin that so in easily entangles us and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us god help us live a disruptive life of faith we must lay aside the things that slow us down god help us do that for your glory we must beware24:15the things that have victory in our lives we must lay aside the things that slow us down and then verse 34 but david said to saul your servant used to keep his father's sheep and when a lion or bear came and took a lamb out of the flock i went after it and struck it down delivered the lamb from its mouth and when it rose against me i24:41caught it by its beard and struck and killed it your servant has killed both lion and bear and this uncircumcised philistine will be like one of them seeing he has defied the armies of the living god moreover david said the lord who has delivered me from the paw of the lion from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the paw of the philistine how do we live a life of faith that disrupts our life we must have confidence25:12we must have confidence look at the confidence that david has and you say well well why do we need to have confidence that's what we have in jesus christ when we can truly sing the cross is enough then i know that there is no power in this world or power underneath this world that can take me from the hand of my savior and that gives me confidence confidence confide with faith with faith and so how25:40what do we need confidence and how do we live that out first verse 34 we need to have confidence that god will protect us and we live in a world where we are fearful people aren't we if you're honest some of you are scared about the election coming up now don't get me wrong i'm not happy about it26:06but i i think the scripture tells us that every day that the lord tarries is a day of more darkness because the world will not be redeemed earth will not be transformed to what it should be until jesus christ returns and maybe that's you maybe you're worried that when so and so is going to get elected that26:29we fall into moral bankruptcy and that the economy collapse and our debt skyrockets and we just won't have the life that we have today by the way debt skyrocketing and we are plunging into moral bankruptcy as we speak and the only answer is jesus christ you can call those lions you can call those bears you can call those whatever you want but we must be people that say because of the scriptures because of the26:57wisdom we have in the lord because of my salvation i have confidence that god will protect me i love the confidence of david they look saul in the face and he says you know what here's the confidence we have in jesus christ that when the world roars at us like a lion look what david does here verse 35 he said when the lion came against me he didn't say i killed it i threw a stick at it how does david defeat27:24this lion how do we defeat fear in our life he grabbed it by the beard i didn't even know lions had beards it's almost as if david grabbed the lion by the beard kissed him on the lips and then said how dare you how dare you defy me what a wonderful picture of of what the lord does to the things that we fear if we give them to him that we can look our fear in the face and say bring it on because my savior gives27:54an answer we must have confidence that god protects us how do we know he protects by god delivered me from the hand of the bear from the hands of the lion and from the hand of the philistine and god says that he will protect us by his righteous right hand god truly protects we must also have confidence in this that god alone gives us the victory as we read that passage what weapon did did david say that god would28:22use to give him confidence your servant has killed both the lion and the bear verse 36 this philistine will be like one of them seeing has defied the armies of the living god what weapon is there silence is the answer we don't see david saying anything we don't see david say you know what i have28:50a rock just for this occasion i have a tool that i am equipped i have trained i have this martial arts technique i i know the weakness of the philistine and this is our struggle often when we come up against things in our life our answer is our strength we fall back into what we have been programmed to do we fall back into our strengths and david says with confidence god has delivered me he doesn't say how29:16he will but he knows that he will and this is the faith that we need to have in our life that when we struggle we need to know that god gives us the victory in our lives and you say well pastor you don't understand what i'm going on through right now i don't and i don't know the answer to what you're going through but i know the one who has the answer and his name is jesus christ god give us29:46confidence in victory that can only come through you i love what this scripture says that david did god gave him victory how verse 36 verse 35 sorry i went out after it he said i struck it delivered the lamb from its mouth when it arose against me god gave david strength to deliver the lamb and here is what30:10the beauty of god's word tells us how can we be people who have confidence god gave david strength to deliver the lamb and because of the lamb you and i have confidence to be delivered in our lives john the baptist looks at jesus and he says this behold the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the world30:37how do we have confidence how do we have how do we be people who live a life with faith that disrupts our life that disrupts our fear that disrupts our struggle we say i have confidence that the lamb sacrificed and died for me do you know the lamb the one that was slain from the foundation of the world30:59for you we need this confidence god give us confidence in our faith disruptive faith beware of things that you've already given victory to because god can help you overcome beware of things that you struggle with in your life that hinder responsibility relationships may we lay those aside god give31:25us disruptive faith that gives us confidence to leave here and lastly god give us victory in our lives verse 44 the philistine said to david now if you don't have your bibles open by the way this is a really good time to turn there you don't want to miss this the philistine said to david come to me31:49and i will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beast of the field now i already think that we see a turn in the favor of the lord here now let me just say this i you don't see the lord's name mentioned until david speaks in this passage let that sink in fear fear intimidation fear struggle battle fight32:14the name of god is not mentioned and then we hear the name of god and things turn we hear the covenant name of the lord and lives change and it is no different in our lives verse 44 philistine said to david come to me now if he is really the champion why would he expect david to come to him think about32:40that if goliath is a champion that he thinks he is why is he challenging this little punk but the bible says he's small of stature he's young the bible says he's actually probably redheaded ruddy and handsome so they're sending this pretty little boy out to fight this seasoned veteran why would goliath want david to come first unless god is already working here verse 45 david said the33:11philistine you come to me with a sword with a spear with a javelin and by the way and a shield bearer and a shield i come to you in the name of the lord of hosts adonai savot for those who are in the tony evans study of the names of god the god who fights with us the god of the armies of israel whom33:40you have insulted whom you have defiled this day the lord will deliver you into my hands now i've heard that word hand before god delivered david from the hand of the lion god delivered david from the hand of the bear god delivered david from the hand of the philistine and this day34:05he says i will give the carcasses of the camp of the philistines to the birds of the air to the wild beast of the earth that all the earth may know that there is a god in israel i i love that that confidence and then he says this then all of this assembly this is not just for the this is not34:27just for the pagans this is for god's people now that all in this assembly shall know that the lord does not save a sword and spear for the battle is the lord's and he will give you into our hands we sometimes in our life need to be people who hear that that we are here assembling in the name34:52of god and yet it still refreshes my soul to hear this that we may know that not with sword or spear but the battle is the lord's i want you to know this morning that if you have a disruptive faith of faith a faith that truly is faith in jesus christ you already have victory and you say well you don't understand what i'm fighting through and i don't have a sword i don't have a stick i don't35:19even have five stones god alone is the one who fights for us and may we be people who lean into the grace of jesus christ and we say god fight our battles and we are going to end here if you want to know how the story ends where the stone sinks into the head of goliath and somehow goliath's head ends up being35:45chopped off by a man who doesn't even have a sword go home and read the victory we have in the lord the god who fights for us the god who gives us victory in our life the god who delivers us from the hands of the things that we struggle how do we know that god gives us victory because he sent his36:08only son that whosoever and you say well pastor who's a whosoever i am you're a whosoever whosoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life life more abundant life more full a life where we can look36:27at our struggles and we can say not by sword not by spear but god is victorious in my life if you have never professed jesus as lord and savior you do not have faith and so pastor i believe good36:50the bible says even the demons believe and shudder it's not just enough to believe but that is a good step that we may believe the bible says we believe with our heart but we must confess with our mouth that there have to be action steps david had to lay aside the sheep david we see in the scriptures that he ran towards goliath there was a moment in david's life where he went from saying god has given me37:16victory to living it and maybe for someone here this morning you say god has given me victory god has delivered me god has healed me but you have never acted upon that and until we take that step of obedience our faith does not become real maybe god is calling you here this morning to just confess your sin confession means that you admit37:44that you're a sinner god already knows but that i say god i agree with you i am a sinner i have fallen short of what you desire in my life over and over and over again but lord i know that you sent your son to live a perfect spotless life that i may have a life abundantly if i believe if i confess if i make that public so maybe this morning this is your time where you need to run as david did and said i need38:12victory maybe you're here today and and you are a believer in jesus christ you have faith but it really hasn't changed your life much because maybe you have come in these doors and you have carried a weight there are things that hinder you you say oh pastor of course i have i have kids and i have a mortgage and38:36i have bills and and i have responsibilities and there's stress at work maybe god is calling you to lay some of those aside maybe you said well you don't understand i'm a shepherd and i have these sheep and i have to bring food and and i don't have the right clothes oh but i heard that story before and i know how it ends if we have faith maybe you need to spend some time at the altar and to say lord let me lay aside39:01the things that hinder me the weights that so easily slow me down and the sin that entangles and father i want to run with perseverance the race that is set before me beware the things that claim victory in your life lay aside that slows you down oh and may we be people that have confidence in the lord this morning and most importantly may we rest in the victory of our savior let's pray39:30morning and most importantly may we rest in the
