Thank you, choir. A wonderful time to worship the Lord through music. Amen. To some, today's message may be a repeat of last week, and some that are here, you're saying, well, it's good. I'm glad you repeated. It's actually part two, but when you get to studying and you realize you probably said everything in part one that you were going to say in part two, you go, well, let's just go for it anyway. Amen. I think we sang some of the same songs that have been in the past.0:32We watched some of the same reruns on TV, and I'll guarantee you there are you Auburn and Alabama fans out there that have watched those national championship games over and over again. So don't fuss if I preach the same sermon twice. If you have your Bibles, turn to the same text, only we're going to turn to two texts today. Genesis chapter 1, verse 28, and then Ephesians chapter 5, verse 22.0:57And the reason that I want to put so much emphasis on marriage these last few days is that it is time that we, the church, were the ones that literally became an example of what a covenant marriage is all about. We're going to talk about covenant marriage in this message today, something that some people may not understand, that a marriage between a man and a woman and God is a covenant relationship, not a contractual relationship.1:26Today, we have contractual marriages, marriages where attorneys draw up contracts and agreements so that if certain things don't happen after a period of time, then other things happen. Rather than truly getting married and falling and having fallen in love with the person that God has placed before you and realizing that love is something that you are determined you're going to have for one another for the rest of your life.1:53Because we don't realize this sometimes that in our pre-love or in our love relationship with one another before we're married, that at some point in time, you're going to wake up and that person's laying next to you's breath stinks. And their hair is ugly. I shared this. I heard this preacher use this illustration a long time ago about a guy that was single,2:20and he said he was never going to get married. But one night, he went out a night on the town, and he went into this bar, and there was this lady up there singing, and she had the reddest hair you could ever imagine flowing down over her shoulders. Beautiful red hair, had the biggest, beautiful ruby red lips you could ever imagine. Her eyelashes came out an inch over her eyes, and she had those ruby cheeks,2:50and she was just the most beautiful thing that he had ever laid his eyes on, and boy, could she sing. She sang, and the more she sang, the more he drank. Little did he know that when she got through singing and he got through drinking, they got married. Well, little did he know he wasn't going to remember all that.3:19So he woke up the next day, and he got up before the woman that he married got up, and he looked over there, and he didn't see much because she was kind of covered up, but he got up and went into the restroom, and there on the counter in the restroom was this styrofoam head with this beautiful, beautiful red hair.3:46Right next to that styrofoam hair was this little cup with these huge one-inch eyelashes. And next to that was a suitcase full of makeup. And laying in the floor beside him, Scott, was a peg leg, artificial leg. And then on the other side of the sink with a toothbrush down in the bowl4:17was a pair of the prettiest white teeth you've ever laid your eyes on. He walked back in to the bedroom, reached over, placed his hands on the shoulders of this woman, and shook her until she woke up and said, what, what, what? He said, sing, baby, sing.4:55I'll guarantee you, there are people in this room that you have wanted to walk over and say, sing, baby, sing. Because this is not nearly what I thought it was going to be. But God called for a commitment. And I wanted to share another story. And this one, I couldn't, I can confirm it, but I couldn't look up all the story.5:20But the story is a beautiful story. True story about a professor of Arkansas Baptist University, I believe it was. And I think he was the president of the university. If I get, I've got the main part right, if I don't know all the titles. But he had been there for many years. And it was later in his lifetime, but his wife slowly started getting sick with dementia,5:43only to ultimately come down with Alzheimer's. And he resigned from this position rather than hire a nurse like everybody had told him to to take care of his wife. Because what he began to realize, that his wife was extremely uncomfortable every time somebody else was in the room except him.6:11And so he left his position to go be with his wife because he knew she would be comfortable with him until she passed. You don't have to sing when you have that kind of commitment and that kind of love for somebody. You know, I think sometimes when we come to the place of marriage, we literally need to realize that as the wife walks down the aisle6:37and the husband's there waiting, that there's someone else waiting as well. And that someone else is Jesus Christ. And when we stand before the minister and we stand to make those covenant vows to one another, that we understand Jesus is standing right in the middle of that relationship. And I just want to go back and remind us.7:07I talked about that we were going to talk about the purpose of marriage. And that there is a purpose. And as we read in Scripture, we see the purpose. There's an immediate purpose. We'll talk about that. And then there's a long-term purpose. But as God brought Adam and Eve together and he blessed them, he said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. And then he said, Subdue it and rule over the fish of the sea7:36and over the birds of the sky and over all living things that move on the face of the earth. Then God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth and every tree which has fruit yielding seed. It shall be food for you and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that moves on the earth which has life. I've given every green plant for food.8:03And it was so. And God saw all that he made and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning and there was the sixth day. And so when we talk about a marriage with purpose, you know, I come to understand that in our day and age, purpose is an important word. Everybody's looking for purpose. We want a purpose for life, you know, and churches want purpose statements and businesses have purpose statements8:32and we would like to think that there's a purpose for us being here, that we're just not a speck in the universe, but that through God's divine, sovereign love for us, he has a purpose for who I am. As many people as there are on the face of the earth, that God has a very distinct and unique purpose for you and for me. And so last week we talked about how God in his creative ability saw something9:01that you and I could never see. And that is, is that he created Adam and he created Adam in the image of himself and the image of them. Then he created Eve and he created them, man and woman, female, in the image of him. He created two opposites. You remember that, that word help meet, that word that says fit, is that he created opposites to start off. And that's very important for us to affirm in our mind9:28that God can bring opposites together. How often I have seen two people come together and they were really totally opposites. She liked something he didn't like, he liked something she didn't like, but yet God brought them together and there were great marriages brought together out of that. That's not to say that God didn't bring people together that have the same likes and the same dislikes. Now, my wife and I are really opposite. She's a firstborn, I'm a firstborn. And, you know, those guys aren't supposed9:57to get along together and we've had our skirmishes in times past and I've usually lost and relinquished to the sovereignty of a beautiful wife. But, I'm sorry, God forgive me. But, you know, God does work. But, the reality of understanding the opposite thing is that when Adam looked at Eve, she was nothing like what he was. And, that's exactly what God meant10:28for this universe to have. It's a man and a woman that are not like one another. God didn't create two Adams. He didn't create two Eves. And, that's not bashing homosexuality. Let me say this real quick too. And, let me say this to the detriment of the morality of the life of men and women in and outside of the church. And, that is, we want to throw rocks at what we're strong against, but, when we fall prey to something,10:58we're not nearly as quick to throw rocks but to forgive. For, in other words, if a man or a woman commits adultery and they were to come and say, you know, forgive me for having committed adultery, man, we'll stand up and say, man, as a church, we forgive you. Thank you for confessing that. That had to be hard. We love you. We want you back in. But, let a man or a woman come forward and say, you know, I've been practicing homosexuality and I want the church to forgive me because I want to break free from this sin that has encompassed my life.11:28my life. We're going to go, whoa, I don't know if I'm going to go down and shake that hand when we should. When we should. But, what I wanted to teach in these two days of marriage talks is an understanding that we don't have to be put in the corner when it comes to defending the creative power of God when he made man and when he made woman and he made them separate but he made them separately but he also made them opposites11:58so that they could come together and create and pursue the purpose that God had established for them. Otherwise, it's impossible to pursue the purpose. And we'll talk about that in a minute as I did a little chemistry study as well. But, first of all, as we read down in Ephesians chapter 5, we have a New Testament understanding of marriage brought about but what God is, it's no different than what God has said in Genesis chapter 1. But in Ephesians chapter 5,12:27and you've, I've preached on this text as well, it's a very important text to help us understand that as husbands and wives there is a specific purpose in our relationship. Wives, be subject to your husbands. You know, we don't like that. They want to take that out of the marriage ceremony and, you know, I don't want to be, I've not had that problem in somebody coming to me and specifically saying I don't want that part to be in our vows as we get married. And I'm glad because it's important. It's biblical. God said,12:56God said, wives, be subject to your own husbands. He didn't say, God, be subject to husbands that are good to you or that are kind to you or nice to you. Sometimes, Paul says over in Corinthians that wives have to love husbands that are lost. And husbands have to love wives that are lost. And I want to tell you, when someone's lost, they're living in darkness. When someone's lost, they're not only living in darkness, they are darkness. So they're not going13:25to make the right decisions 999,000% of the time. They're never going to make the right decision because they're always going to be under the control and rule and the reign of the prince of darkness and of darkness itself because they're darkness. But Paul said, you know, that's not the reason, that's not a reason for you to divorce or separate. So wives be subject to your own husbands as unto the Lord. He even compares it. That even brings greater emphasis13:54greater emphasis on that relationship. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ also is the head of the church. What a comparison is Christ the head of the church? That's right. And so he says, he himself being the savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be their husbands in everything, to their husbands14:24in everything. You know, if we just left it there, the wives would go out of here, golly, my boy, you just really blasted me today. But we're not. We're going to go to that next verse. Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church. Now guys, let me stop for a minute and say something. We can hear this sermon and you can hear these sermons all week long, every day and every night. And we can walk14:53out here. But let me say this as I precede the sermon. If we sit and do nothing about the sin that is in our life because of what we've committed against our husbands and our wives, confess nothing and do nothing about what we're doing and the actions that we're taking toward our wives, there's no wonder the church is as weak as it is. It is no wonder that there are struggles that are going on in the world today when we as husbands and wives in the church are not doing15:23biblically what God has called us to do in loving and caring for our wives and caring for our husbands as Christ has said that we should. Living biblical, creating a biblical family out of what God's word has called biblical truth. And so as we listen to this message, if it convicts our hearts, then let us do the one and only thing that we can do and that is confess our sins to a God who is gracious enough to forgive us and start working and it's not working salvation. You know, you can't work salvation.15:52Salvation is here in yours and it is God's free gift to you. But because you are saved, you are expected by God to live under certain standards. We'll talk about that in just a minute as we read a couple more verses. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself up for it so that he might sanctify her having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word that he might present to himself the church in all her glory16:21having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also, now that's talking about Christ and the church, now he's talking about husbands. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. I'll guarantee you we'll treat them differently if we loved them as much as we love ourselves. You know, you see these old guys walking around in these big old16:51burly bodies and I took my shirt off I didn't embarrass them y'all out here today because they love themselves so much. You take a guy, you know, sometimes it's not women's perfume that gets to me as much as it is some of the cologne these guys wear. Oh Lord. I won't say anything else over that because you may be sitting there when you've just sprayed that man bod all over you.17:25But anyway, and he, he goes on. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. You know, what psychology is that? For no one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as Christ also does the church because we are members of his body. You know, we can make all excuses17:54all excuses in the world. I don't even know why I'm preaching. I don't know why I even have to teach this. I think we ought to have to just read it. It is so clear why we are so struggling in this society today. we want to throw rocks at Obamacare. My friend, we need to look in the mirror at God care. We want to blame all the struggles that we've got going on in our world on somebody's18:24on somebody's political decisions when we know that God has written a purpose and a plan for our life out that is universal to everyone that is born again and we are not willing to adhere to it.18:45For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. this mystery is great but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself and the wife must see to it19:15that she respects her husband. So the first thing we see that I want to talk about is no more power struggles in marriage but more marriages with power. No more power struggles in marriages but marriages with power. That means we don't have that, you know, I know that we joke19:44about and it's alright to joke about. I get tickled at these car tags that got an Alabama symbol on one side and an Auburn symbol on the other side and, you know, they call them mixed marriages and they're alright and that's fine but I want to tell you something that's okay but the tragic and reality is that sometimes inside that house whether there's a football fan or not there's a husband and a wife that's at odds20:14at each other because they're not willing to listen to what God's word has said and fall into the leadership of the Holy Spirit creating in them that one new creature that God seeks for us to be. God created man with an immediate purpose he created woman with an immediate purpose there is an immediate purpose and there is an eternal purpose that immediate purpose we see up here is be fruitful and multiply God said go out and make20:44and make those that are like yourselves in other words we know the birds and the bees it's not about the birds and the bees it's about a husband and a wife coming together once they have fulfilled the covenant relationship in the eyes of God and been married that they come together and they begin having children husbands and wives we have all kinds of promiscuous types of immorality21:14of immorality that have invaded the church and invaded our society and it's really tragic when we refuse to listen to what God's word literally says and my friend somebody said to me something one time you know how do you really think you can keep God's word I really think you can keep God's word if you let the Holy Spirit give you the leadership you'll be perfect no but you'll keep God's word God created man with an eternal purpose it is through21:43marriage that God reveals his union to the church with marriage we just talked about it's through marriage that God reveals his relationship to the church we have this important understanding marriage turns two into one have you noticed how important that is in Genesis and how important it is that God repeats it in Ephesians to become one a man and woman joined together become one and he says it's a mystery I'm talking about the church but nevertheless you men you gotta understand while there's a woman beside you22:12beside you and yes there's two people in the picture there's one mind one purpose one heart beating together because you love that woman that's next to you like you love your own body and you're caring for her and you're making sure her mental spiritual stability is strong and mighty because God has placed that responsibility on you men it's not something that you and I ask for but it's something that God has given us and I want to tell you something we will stand before God and give an account of the fact we refuse to accept the responsibility22:42the responsibility of being godly men but I want to tell you you as a wife will also stand before God and give an account for not being a godly wife to a godly man whether he's godly or not one plus one equals one I thought that interesting the universe is built on the premise that two opposites attract two positive atoms23:11atoms oppose each other just like two negative opposites each other but an opposite and a negative attract each other all the time listen this is chemistry this is not I didn't get this off the the religious the religion.com I just want to read it I thought it was fascinating February 10 2010 now they may have found out something different the last two years no negatives attract two positives because you have to have an even balance positive repels positive and negative23:41and negative repels negative at normal conditions listen to this at normal conditions two same polarity charges or particles never attract to each other but we can force them I thought this interesting but we can force them to combine if pressure and temperature is increased to million of degrees like in the core of our24:10of our sun it is called thermonuclear reaction where same charge collide with each other because of enormous pressure and temperatures forming new particles you know I read that and I'm trying to understand I didn't take chemistry in high school but I took chemistry for elementary school teachers in college and that was the most fun class that I had because I really understood it I understood chemistry like a fifth grader first grader24:38first grader but here it is he says that the only way you're ever going to get two positives or two negatives to come together is under an immense amount of pressure and heat like we find at the core of the sun now I don't know I can't comprehend how hot it must be at the core of the sun but I can fathom that it's pretty hot there and I'm thinking to myself what's happening in our world today when we see homosexuality and we see the25:08see the growth of it it's a vogue thing nowadays that that somebody come out gay or that somebody be gay or that it's okay if you don't believe it just walk down the halls of our schools but you know it's the same vogue that we went through in the 70s as it was for men and women that were married together to have group parties you adults know what I'm talking about wife swapping parties throw your car keys out there on the table and just see whose wife you get to go spend the evening with that25:38with that was vogue then too there are other things that have been vogue in our society that listen if I create a question that you need to go talk to your children about please go talk to them about it don't be afraid to explain to them what I'm saying because I hope I'm saying it from a heart that it must be said we are so afraid to cross the road of understanding that we stand back26:07stand back and so often when we do premarital counseling we have very little you know they're scared to death when they come and we get to the sex talk and premarital counseling you know it's like you're my preacher well somebody's got to talk to you about it I just want to talk to you about it from a biblical perspective you know God created it he said be fruitful multiply I didn't and so26:37and so we need to and I want to tell you something dads you don't need to be afraid to sit down and talk to your daughters and moms you don't need to be afraid to sit down and talk to your daughters either and you don't need to be afraid to sit and talk to your sons but you need to do it with your Bible in front of you because it can be the most blessed union ever but back to the concern can you imagine the immense amount of pressure that Satan27:06Satan and darkness puts on a young man and a young woman's life to create in them the mindset that they think that it's okay to like same sex relationships and isn't it tragic that today I could probably be arrested if this was to go on national news I don't think going national news but somebody picks it up I can't think of any better reason to be arrested I'm not trying to bash anything I'm trying to say that27:36that God's word and chemistry come together to explain to us that like particles don't like each other for a long time do you know there are more homosexuals that are suicidal and try or commit suicide than heterosexual relationships do you know more homosexuals have more homosexual relationships than heterosexuals have heterosexual relationships in other words they have multiple multiple partners it's not unusual28:06unusual for a homosexual partner the time he dies have over 400 relationships don't get into all that what we need to understand we shouldn't care about the statistics what we need to care about is what God's word is said and when God the only way God is going to make two people one is when one's a man and one's a woman the miracle of two becoming one can only happen under the influence and work of the Holy Spirit of28:36of God it is the completeness of God's purpose within a couple's life when a husband and a wife come together and God makes one I said this last week and I just want to reiterate it again this way because I think it's amazing that when people stay married for a long period of time they begin looking more alike than they do their own families they do sometimes I don't know if we just go out and try to find somebody that looks like I did not go out and try to find somebody that look like my sister I29:05I love my sister to death and my sister is a beautiful young lady but I'm going to tell you my wife is a knock out but also she was who God had set aside for me and so when we came together it's been one struggle under intense heat but29:35but God is building slowly but surely one out of us two people becoming one and bringing forth many be fruitful and multiply procreate procreating I like the meaning as you look the word up in the Greek where it says be fruitful it says to beget and conceive all springs I30:04I call this multiplication by command God commanded it multiplication by design God designed it see we get in an argument when we get in an argument with people whose psychologies come into play when God says hey there's no psychology here I commanded for Adam and Eve to come together create them to come together and multiply to have offsprings like themselves and then he tells us and to subdue30:34subdue and reign over the earth my friend we failed at that quickly as Adam and Eve were both expelled from the garden of Eden and no longer ruled the earth as God had intended to begin with but I want to coming together to as one reign and rule in their home and they subdue it they are the leaders you31:03you don't get anywhere in a home when one child thinks that she can go to a father or he can go to a mother to get what he wants over and beyond his wife or mom you know if I go to dad I know I'll get this when a mom and dad come together and say that ain't gonna happen to us we are of one mind we're going to31:33the boundaries and whatever it is we are as one marriage turns two into one and they respond as one marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman and God Proverbs 2 16 7 says to deliver you from the strange woman from the adulteress who flatters with her words that leaves the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of32:02of her God and Malachi 2 14 yet you say for what reason because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth against whom you have dealt treacherously though she is your companion and your wife by covenant this covenant relationship is as important to understand as anything we understand about our marriage and I want to first begin by establishing the fact that God established32:31established marriage as a covenant relationship you read it in Malachi chapter 2 verse 14 you read it in Proverbs chapter 2 verse 16 and covenant relationships were important to God from the very beginning you have the Adamic covenant you have the Mosaic covenant you have the Noah covenant you have the Abrahamic covenant you have covenants that God made with Israel through Jeremiah and through Israel you have the new covenant that Jesus declares that he makes unto us at the Lord's Supper so covenant is a very important part of our relationship33:01relationship with God and it's a very important part of our relationship with one another here are the differences between covenants and contracts a covenant is based on trust between parties a contract is based on distrust when we come together we come together fully trusting that the person that God has placed before us that we're going to live the rest of our life with that we're going to have our children with that we're going to grow old with I can trust them with everything the tragedy is darkness enters into that picture33:30that picture sometimes a covenant is based on unlimited responsibility that means you're not limited to your responsibility of your covenant as far as illness goes as far as economics goes as far as whatever goes listen I think it is awesome when we see people that are going through hard times and rather than a husband belling out on his wife or a wife belling out on her husband that they come together to understand they're34:00understand they're in it together and I'll tell you something men more men need to learn that their wives are hurting as bad as they're hurting with your job as you're hurting with your job and you need to loosen up and let your wife pull alongside you and some men need to loosen up and pull alongside your wife a covenant cannot be broken if new circumstances occur well you know we just kind of grew apart you know I've heard that34:30that you know back you know people get 50 years old their kids grow up they go away and all of a sudden the husband and the wife find out they don't really have anything in common and the only reason I think they find that out is because they never saw God my wife and I have had Jesus in common do we need anything else any more than that you know we talk about that we talk about Jesus being common now she don't she's not as crazy about football as I am but she she'll35:00she'll sometimes she'll sit around and watch a game with me every now and then but I don't make her say you gotta sit and watch this ball game and get as excited as I do nope she don't but you know I thank God she don't make me go to the thrift store with her anymore she said honey I'm gonna go down to Chico's I said all I ask is give me the credit card go down there find something you like come back let's pray about it and then we'll go back and buy it a covenant35:26a covenant cannot be broken I don't know what's gonna happen when we get to heaven I thank God for grace and forgiveness and marriage relationships I thank God for grace and forgiveness and I'm not and you know you may be married divorced you say well what's he saying I said you better stick together if you're struggling right now in your marriage you better figure out how to work it out you better go I want to tell you something men you better get on your face and you better go35:55go humbling praying and begging whatever it is that your wife will forgive you and wife you you need to be seeking that same kind of desire and relationship with your own husband a contract can be voided by mutual consent so he goes on to say therefore the marriage covenant between a man and a woman is comprehensive and permanent commitment this type of marriage covenant was ordained by God to provide believers with a picture listen to this with a picture of36:25Christ's love and relationship to his church we see that in Ephesians 5 22 that I just read and we also see it in Revelation chapter 21 verses 2 and verse 9 marriage has an immediate purpose and that is that it begins to immediately reflect God's design and I want to tell you something as husbands and wives36:55and wives here today we don't need to be looking beyond that if we are struggling we need to be looking to find forgiveness for it whatever we've done to disrupt our marriage whatever we've done to disrupt our relationship and you know there may be relationships that we need to go back and ask forgiveness for because we have sinned in those relationships and you know you may be here today and you know you can't go back your wife's remarried your husband's remarried but you know you sinned in that relationship you need to go37:24back and make it right my friend we have gone way too far to cover up what we've done wrong rather than confess what we need to do to get right and that goes for all of us where we're at today it may mean that you need to look over there at your sweet wife and say you know I was a jerk yesterday and I want you to forgive me now don't look back at him and say yeah you were but you can37:52look back at him and say that's okay I love you and I forgive you and here's why because God has looked at you and he's looked at me through the eyes of his son Jesus Christ and every one of us were a bunch of jerks but he said I love you anyway and I38:21and I forgive you anyway and we need to be about the same activity as our Lord was and I want to close with reading this this one verse very quickly now this I say testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds they are darkened in their understanding alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance38:50the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts they have become callous and have given themselves up to sensualities greedy to practice every kind of impurity but that is not the way you learned Christ assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him as the truth is in Jesus to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put39:20on the new self created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness you see that's who we are that's who what we're about nothing less nothing more we just need to obey God here today not obey the preacher but obey the word let's pray father as we come
