I went over to somebody's house yesterday. I won't mention anybody's name. Don't want to embarrass them, but when they heard me talking, they said, well, things are looking up for Sunday. I don't know how they actually meant that other than I think they were hoping0:29for a 20-minute sermon, but when my voice is like this, it just takes longer. Today, I want you to turn in your Bibles with me to Isaiah chapter 53. As we shared, there's a series of messages. Last week, about the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and the supernatural work of God in that0:58entry. The fact that there was preparation that Jesus shared with his apostles in their preparation that God was going on ahead. God was doing the work, and as Christ came in, they recognized for a moment that he was the Messiah, and they gave him praise. They throw their cloaks down before him. They throw palm branches down before him, and he entered into this holy of holy cities that God had1:23set aside centuries before for the purpose of his Messiah. Now, today may be one of the most emotional messages that I preach. And you say, well, there are a lot of them, but I want to tell you today, I want to talk to you about the suffering of Jesus Christ. And I want to separate it from his death.1:46What I want to talk to you about today is before he died, the suffering of the Godhead. Now, you know, it's real easy for all of us to sit here and sing our songs of praise. Some, it's easy to sit there and never put your heart in it. It's easy to sit there and never put your soul in it. It's easy to sit in church and never feel any emotion. It's easy to read your Bible and never2:14grasp what you're reading. It's easy to just sit idly by and never take in what has been done for you. What we want to make sure you do and understand is that God, because of his infinite love for you, God, because the magnitude of his love for you and for me, God, because he loved so much,2:37suffered for us. We're going to talk about that suffering. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to Isaiah chapter 53 verses 1 through 12. As we read Isaiah chapter 53 verses 1 through 12, we have Isaiah's description in one of the passages that we call the suffering servant passages. When I3:05read this passage, I don't understand how a Jew, an Orthodox Jew would read this and not see it as a explicit picture of the suffering of the Messiah. But when an Orthodox Jew reads this passage, he sees it as a descriptive passage of Israel, of the nation itself, of the people and of their suffering,3:31and they don't place it on the Messiah. But we see that as the Messiah comes, it is a beautiful exact description of who he is and what he does for us. Who has believed our message, the writer begins, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before us, or he grew up before him3:55like a tender shoot and like a root out of parched ground. He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon him, nor appearance of that, nor appearance that we should be attracted to him. He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, and like one from whom men4:17hide their face. He was despised and we did not esteem him. Surely our griefs he himself bore, and our sorrows he carried, yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. He was pierced through4:41for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The chastening for our well-being fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him. He was oppressed5:09and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers. So he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living?5:32For the transgressions of my people to whom the stroke was due, his grave was assigned with wicked men, yet he was with a rich man in his death. Because he had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in his mouth. But the Lord was pleased to crush him, putting him to grief. If he would render himself5:57as a guilt offering, he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in his hand. As a result of the anguish of his soul, he will see it and be satisfied. By his knowledge, the righteous one, my servant will justify the many, as he will bear their iniquities.6:25Therefore, I will allot him a portion with the great, and he will divide the booty with the strong, because he poured out himself to death and was numbered with the transgressors. Yet he himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressions."6:49Wow, what a powerful passage. I think we ought to read that every day to kind of keep us focused on what we're about here on earth. Because life is not about us. We say that all the time. But I want to tell you, very few people live like life's not about them. The majority of us live like life's about us. We do what's best for us. We make decisions according to what's best for us. We're7:14concerned when people hurt, or when we're hurt, because we're concerned about how they feel about us. You know, there are people all over who live their life claiming to understand the beauty of Scripture, but never really truly placing the emphasis of their life on the suffering of Jesus Christ. Let me share with you what one writer writes.7:45And please bear with me. Because a theologian would call what we're talking about here, penal substitution, which derives from the idea that divine forgiveness must satisfy divine justice. In other words, the divine must satisfy the sin and declares a divine justice. That is that God is not willing or able to simply forgive sin8:11without first requiring a satisfaction for it. It states that God gave himself in the person of his son Jesus Christ to suffer the death, punishment, and curse due to fallen humanity as the penalty for our sins. To concede this head, the occasion, nature,8:41efficacy, and intent of the Messiah's sufferings as delivered in their prophecies appear to be the very same as those of the sufferings of Jesus delivered in the New Testament. The occasion of the Messiah's sufferings was not to be for any sin of his own, but for the sins of others, for which his death was to be a propitiation or an expiation sacrifice, an expiational sacrifice,9:07whereby, "whereby sin was to be abolished and done away, peace and pardon procured, and an everlasting righteousness brought in, and this upon the account of all the people of God. For he perfectly agrees with those doctrines, respecting the occasion, nature, and of the intent and extent of the sufferings of Jesus,9:29which the New Testament abounds with." So as we think about it, here are some thoughts that I have that I think bring us to a very emotional understanding. Christ's suffering for us was personal. Now, let me share with you what I mean by that. The only way that God could keep us from suffering like the people in Sodom and Gomorrah, the only way that God could keep us from suffering9:59like the people on the outside of the ark, the only way that God could keep us from suffering is if he himself provided a sacrifice, a substitute. You see, it would no longer satisfy God that we could go find something that would be perfect and offer it to him ourselves, because everything we have is in perfect. Now, God did declare in the Old Testament the perfection of a lamb as best he could, and most of10:29the judgments and sermons that the prophets preached was is that the people were becoming more and more lax on their desire to even give a perfect lamb or sacrifice. It's not unlike us today. Even though we know that Christ must personally suffer, we try to impose on God our righteousness. We try to impose our goodness. We try to impose our betterment. We try to think that, hey, God loves me because I. No, God loves10:55you because he. It's not because you. And thus, when God brought about a substitute for the suffering that must occur for the ultimate forgiveness of your sin and my sin, Jesus Christ, the God-man, had to be that suffering. So Christ's suffering was, is, however you want to look at it, personal. He does it himself.11:21He himself became the God-man. As we look at Jesus Christ and we understand the Trinity, we understand God, God, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus, all three individual personalities, but all three God. Thus, when God saw the need for your sins and my sins, he saw the need for himself to suffer.11:46You know, how many of you seen, you don't have to raise your hand, but you've seen the movie The Passion of the Christ, and the reality of it, and it drew more than anybody, was the truth of the12:06suffering and the beating, the gore of the abuse that happened to the Savior, and that got a whole lot of of attention. And yet people watch it, some cried, some wept, some were emotional, some were filled with emotion for the moment. But I want to tell you something, that's not something to be taken for12:32an experience at a movie and left behind somewhere in life. But every day, we need to think for a moment that I have today because he suffered like he did for me. His suffering, not only in being personal, his suffering was also in my place. No one could suffer in his place. Nobody could take and provide12:53their own sacrifice for him. Listen to Philippians chapter two, as we read beginning in verse one. Therefore, if there's any encouragement in Christ, if there's any consolation of love, if there's any fellowship of the Spirit, any affliction and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty13:20deceit, but with humility of mind, regard one another as more important than yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interest, but also for the interest of others. Have this attitude in yourselves, God bless you, but also for your own personal interest? Do not regard equality with God a thing to be13:43grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a bondservant and being made in the likeness of man, being found in appearance as a man. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. So the suffering of God was a literal suffering that came through the incarnate14:09Jesus Christ for you and me. Why shouldn't that bring out emotion in us? Why shouldn't that challenge our heart and our life and our desires? When we think of what took place in that moment when they drug Jesus Christ from the garden? Well, let's back up. Let's go to the garden. Let's go to the life that he lived.14:37Let's go to the preparation of those apostles and every lesson that he gave them. He's teaching them over and over again that he must suffer and that he must die. And in every moment in their finite minds, they could not grasp the reality or the truth of what God was saying to them through Jesus Christ,14:59that it would take for their sins to be forgiven. My friend, I stand before you today not because I'm good enough to be here, but because Jesus Christ suffered enough for me to be here. You're here today if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, knowing that it was the pure love of God through the abuse of the Son of God15:29God that brings you to this place. Your joy is purchased by the suffering of Jesus Christ. Your life is brought and provided by the suffering of Jesus Christ. How is it that at any time we could let anyone or anybody lead us to believe that there might be some other way that God could do what God did through15:57Jesus Christ? Folks, I shared this with our Wednesday night people. I had a professor in school. I don't know if he's just trying to to jerk us around or what But I want to tell you something He made this statement When it was asking Do you believe that God could have done it some other way? In other words, do you believe that God had to come as a As Jesus Christ live a sinless life, die on a cross, suffer, die on a cross, buried and rose again? And he said16:26Yes, I do. My friend That is the beginning of Satan's life for you here today Not only the reality that God could not have done it another way But the reality of God doing it through a fully physical and God man Physical in every way16:55In other words, just like you and I How would you like to be brought up on this stage and some big burly Young man in this church begin whipping your back with a whip? How would you like it if you were to be dragged up here on this place and nobody whipped you But everybody came by and spit in your face? How would you like it if you could look around and see everybody in this room turn their back on you?17:22Even the people that you thought would love you the most That's the suffering that Jesus Christ took No one could suffer in his place God could not create anyone like him A clone or an example It had to be a God man and that God man was Jesus Christ17:46His sufferings were seen before beginning of time Now I don't know how you look at time God there there is no time with God But as I think about time I I kind of look at before the earth was created That may be before time You know because I kind of begin seeing time as God begins creation But in first Peter chapter 1 verse 17 It says if you address as the father the one who impartially judges according to the flesh18:15Each one's works and conduct yourselves Listen to this Conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth I wonder how many of us live fearfully Anyway, he says knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold From your feudal way or life inherited from your forefathers But with precious blood That's how you got here With precious blood does that not Make you ashamed of the attitude that you came to church with this morning if you came to church with a bad attitude?18:45Does that not make you ashamed that you? That you walk looking at everything and in perspective of what's wrong Rather than the potential of how God can use you for what's right? Doesn't it doesn't it doesn't it bother you? That god Loved you so much that the bible says he purchased you with his blood look he goes on For he was foreknown before the foundation of the world19:14But has appeared in these last times for the sake of you Who through him are believers in god who raised him from the dead and gave him glory so that your faith and hope Are in god before the foundation of the world before time God knew Christ Would suffer now not only Is that christ suffering personal no one else could do it19:42I appreciate eric taking over this for me because I can't remember to do two things at one time But we also want to see what the next one is christ's suffering was painful Folks I don't you know we think of god As it's being painless We think of god's being god god's bigger than pain God's bigger than riches god's bigger than happiness We think and and we try to judge God's suffering with our suffering we try to think well, you know i've suffered20:12I lost a child i've suffered i've lost a brother i've lost a sister i've lost a mother i've lost the father I've suffered i've got cancer i've suffered i've had this disease I've suffered i've been beaten i've suffered i've been bullied i've suffered but I want to tell you something your pain Does not equal what jesus christ felt you see for he to be The substitute and it be the painful substitute he in his flesh had to suffer pain20:40You know today We don't think about that when we live our selfish lives do we We don't think about that when we don't get what we want on a birthday or at christmas or we don't get what we want Because we deserve it. We don't think about What he went through just so you and I could be here to breathe Just so you and I could one day have an answer to death21:10Just so one day you and I could fully know the extent of the pure joy of god If you ever asked yourself why you're not experiencing the fullness of christ's joy in your life If he went through a personal painful suffering for you to know it If you not ask yourself why the peace that passes all understanding is not a personal endeavor on your part21:35The bible says his suffering was painful. He was oppressed and he was afflicted But the lord was pleased to crush him Putting him to grief. He suffered Mentally, I want you to notice in that mental part. You say how do you know he suffered mentally? The word agony is used the anguish he felt in the garden the word agonized jesus22:01Agonized in prayer. Let this cup pass from me and being in agony in luke 22 44 he says he was praying very Fervently, let me share with you that word agony comes from the word agon. Do you know where they got that word from? That word comes from the arena of where the uh, the the person The the the gladiators fault at first it that word did not mean anything bad22:30It was just like we would call it a stadium But as the action that took place in the stadium progressed the word agon becomes the word agony because in the stadium Agony was felt It was in the stadium that christians were persecuted22:56It was in the stadiums that they were bought they were they were boiled in oil It was in the stadiums. They were thrown to the lions. It was in stadiums that they were tied to horses and torn apart It was in stadiums. So when the bible tells us that jesus Was in agony? He was in a mental agony to the extent the bible says that his forehead bled folks I want us to understand something here today23:24God suffered so you could be here today God agonized So you could have what you have today The cross The forgiveness The pardon of your sins The opportunity to know christ and to know the fullness of joy and peace and and all the things that come from knowing god23:46There was no other way god suffered the agony Of mental anguish Though listen to this the word was more frequently used Eventually to denote severe emotional strain and agony I've seen people in agony before24:15I've seen people struggling in agony before i've heard Mothers cry out in agony before I've heard young people cry out in agony before I've seen agony at all stages of life I've seen the agony of a young man who twisted his knee in his senior year of high school having had uh a university calling him and sending him letters and talking to him about coming and being a football player24:40But during these days there was not the surgery that you see dr. Andrews and those guys performing that we see today And so in the end zone He played at hewitt trustful high school It was back in about 1976 1977 He went up for a touchdown pass and made the pass came down on his knee twisted his knee and uh Literally tore the the the ligaments loose and everything just one of those really really tragic accidents that occur on the football field25:07You say well. Well, I saw the pain As it occurred but that was nothing like the pain when I visited him in his home Because here's what he come to realize All those letters and all those calls were for nothing for nothing for naught All the hopes and dreams of going to a major college university and being a wide receiver were gone25:38There's no way they're going to honor that scholarship and they didn't And I remember working with that young man For weeks as his youth pastor And loving him and caring for him and praying with him and talking to him about the significance of his life I've seen that agony Listen I've seen the other agonies as well I've seen the agony of death26:09I've seen the horror of suffering You have many of you have too But my friend, I want to tell you something None of that agony none of that suffering was anything like what jesus christ went through for you So the next time before you whine or you complain or you feel sorry for yourself I want you to think about that walk he took26:39up down the streets of jerusalem and up the hill to galgotha with all the abuses that he took physically i'm not talking about the spiritual abuse that we'll see later on the cross I'm talking about the physical anguish that he went through Why why anguish the the suffering why why the suffering well suffering had to come to peace God remember27:10penal substitution means suffering that means somebody's got to hurt because of your sin and my sin somebody's got to suffer somebody's got to die you know it's easy to think about jesus and dying you know it would really be easy if we could think about jesus death just being dead you know maybe had a heart attack what an easy way to go maybe he just had a a brain aneurysm easy you say preacher you're talking about things you don't know about i suffered with a loved one that had that well i'd much rather see that than what i've seen others suffer through27:40but even in the life of christ and in the death of christ before the death was the physical suffering of god's wrath you see god was pouring out god was allowing what was taking place on jesus christ to take place for your sin and my sin and i want you to think about this what's the worst kind of pain that you can imagine and before you try to answer that let me tell you28:10what i think it is anticipated pain listen there was nothing that was harder for me as a child than to anticipate the fact that my dad was fixed to come home and beat my rear because i made an elf in a class and changed it to a b did you really do that yeah i did that i want to tell you something that was anguish28:36i want to tell you i suffer i'm i'm telling you why i really did i was in fifth grade i was old enough to know what my dad was going to do about that and he did and you say well in that in that kind of sad no i want to tell you something i talk to people all time you're fixing to go through this kind of surgery my mother's fixing to have her second or third hip transplant she's trying to psych herself up for the pain i can tell that there are people that29:00that anticipate pain when jesus christ bowed in the garden and he began to pray he was anticipating the pain not only the pain but the death but the pain you see he didn't he knew he could he could do it with god's strength let this cup pass from me but29:26not my will i will be done but can you imagine the humanity that that he felt and can i do it now i'm not saying that the question ever entered his mind other than the fact that while he's there anticipating what he's about to go through agony is at its worst when it's anticipated with unexpected suffering29:53suffering john 17 i don't know jesus says in verse 20 i do not ask on behalf of these alone but for those who also believe in me though they're through their word that they may all be one even as you father are in me and i in you there was the unity of the suffering of the godhead do you ever think about that30:18do you ever think about what kind of god would love us so much that he would go through so much for us no one could suffer in his place no one could take it upon him he suffered emotionally he was to30:40undergo much reproach for men to be despised and rejected by them nay to be accounted a worm and no man would suffer like that he was despised and forsaken for men a man of sorrows acquainted with grief and like one from whom men hid their face he was despised and we did not esteem him31:02you know what i find in ministry a lot of people that never suffer physical pain and emotional pain becomes deeper than physical pain people who begin to suffer emotionally it's as though they're going through the physical part of it because they're going through the31:28emotional part of it i've seen people who i truly believe are suffering more emotionally than they are physically jesus suffered emotionally listen psalm 22 verse 6 but i'm a worm and not a man a reproach of men and despised by men and then of course we can't forget that he suffered physically mark 14 65 some begin to spit at him and to blindfold him and to beat him with their fist31:54luke 22 63 now the men who were holding jesus in custody were mocking him beating him and they were blindfolding him and were asking him saying prophesy who is this one uh who hit you and they were saying many at the things against him blaspheming mark 15 18 they kept beating his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling and bowing before him mocking him his pain was real his pain was real for you the next time32:23that you know someone asks us hey can you keep the nursery oh no that's too much really hey could you teach a class of of eight-year-old boys well that that's more than than you can ask really hey do you mind if god laid it on the heart of the church that you would become a deacon oh no i couldn't do that32:53you know every time i say no to an opportunity that god gives me to serve i think how can i say no when you've done so much for me i wonder how it is often when people get upset sometimes when when we preach on tithing or we33:20preach on stewardship in general and so we're trying to get in people's pockets really really when he did everything finally i want you to look at christ's pain as being powerful christ's pain as being powerful surely our griefs33:46he himself bore and our sorrows he carried yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken smitten of god and afflicted but he was pierced through for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities the chastening for our well-being fell upon him and by his scourging we are healed all of us like sheep have gone astray each of us has turned to34:11his own way but the lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him christ's pain was powerful notice in that passage he bore our grief you know i don't have to grieve as though i have no hope as paul writes in first corinthians34:37chapter 4 verse 13 i'm not happy to be ignorant brethren concerning them that sleep or those that are dead as though you grieve as those that have no hope because jesus has taken my grief away i can have a funeral you can have my funeral you can have my funeral and have a party because my grief is gone my fear of death is gone my fear of the wrath of god falling on me35:01is non-existent why because i know that jesus christ took the suffering and the sting of death in him and took it off of me i can live on the edge i can live in power i can live without the emotion of of unfulfillment i can35:28live with the emotion of fulfillment because i can live my life in jesus christ he bore our griefs notice he carried our sorrows he carried our sorrows away you know humanity and human nature creates sorrow for all of us35:57and our biggest enemy is ourselves and one of the great tragedies and we talked about it this past wednesday night is the lack of people being familiar with scripture you know people that aren't familiar with scripture will usually come to me and say brother chris i just don't understand the bible well i want to tell you something i know my wife i know her fairly well36:23but that's because there's clarity in our relationship because there's familiarity in our relationship we spend time together listen i can tick her off right now but i wouldn't do it for nothing she could tick me off right now there's no question you sure have to guess look she don't know me because she knows my favorite color36:53she knows me because she's lived with me for 38 years plus37:09so clear familiarity breeds clarity in other words if i'm going to understand what i'm teaching you right now you're going to have to get in the word and read it you're going to have to let god through his holy spirit help you experience it you're going to have to understand that through the foolishness of our flesh we degrade the sacrifice of god37:33he took our transgressions off of us in other words the penalty for my sin fail on his suffering and his death i don't have to suffer like sodom and camara suffered i don't have to suffer like those that don't know christ will suffer one day38:01the suffering that i suffer for a moment in this flesh is because of this flesh but the real strength of my life comes to the knowledge that my jesus suffered for me he took my pain he took my agony he took my beating you know i have a sister two years younger than me i don't remember every time that my daddy took out his belt and came after me38:32i don't remember one time that my sister stopped run and said no daddy you spanked me instead any y'all ever do that don't remember one time now rick you had a bunch of brothers and you're the the oldest of those brothers you may have done that but but i i never remember my sister ever taking that for me38:58and you know i don't remember pulling over and a police officer having somebody stop and say give me that ticket i don't remember ever placing myself in a spot of somebody else dying and dying in their place where i wouldn't be here but you know not only did he not die for you39:29but he took your beating he took your whooping and i want to tell you something it's far bigger than a beating and a whooping when it's called the wrath of god and jesus christ suffered the wrath of god39:52no man can scare me like god can not only did he take my transgressions but he did his part in my place you see i should have been there in the garden40:22so should you i should have been walking down that street and so should you and at some time in this life or in the afterlife you and i should stand and god should pour out all of his hatred on sin on us you see god ought to flog us god ought to beat us god ought to pour his wrath on us40:52but he won't if you've trusted jesus christ because he did to jesus christ you see he poured it all out on jesus he held nothing back for you and for me now why is it not that we would choose41:22to live life at its fullest why should we not choose to smile the next time we go through jacks and they give us a cheeseburger instead of a hamburger why should we get upset because congress didn't vote on this or voted on that because i think we like abraham need to realize because what god did on jesus we truly have a city not built by hands waiting on us41:47because jesus christ suffered specifically painfully personally powerfully for you and for me and you can enter in to the the grace of god's love and forgiveness and not know that suffering by confessing christ as your lord and savior42:16if jesus christ is speaking to your heart now i want to tell you something it's just like this i can stand right here under the righteousness of christ and the wrath will come and there'll be those that suffer but i won't you in christ the wrath will come you won't suffer but my friend there's a wrath that you and i cannot even imagine that jesus christ walked through that day42:46for me and you don't have to if you're confessing as your lord and savior let's pray father thank you for being my substitute thank you god that you know that you alone could be the one could be the one that would be the sacrifice that would be acceptable43:15to yourself and you did it and god in doing it you said for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life and god today i thank you that i have everlasting life but i thank you more also that i do not have to suffer your wrath that god i am not on the outside of the ark looking in43:45but i'm on the inside of the ark of jesus christ looking out but god i'm not wandering through the gates of this world of sodom and gomorrah but lord i live in this city not made with hands that one day i'll possess as a child of the king lord today i would pray if there is anyone in this building that does not know you as their savior44:11god if there's anyone in this building that has not considered the suffering that you've done for them today lord may you impose it through your spirit into our hearts and our minds the majesty and the magnitude of what you've done for us and god i pray it in jesus name amen44:39i'm going to ask you to stand for our hymn of invitation going to invite you to come if you don't know christ as your personal savior i invite you to simply step out and come we would love to talk to you and share with you how you can know god how you can know god imagine that how you can know him and not know his suffering not be a part of that but also today if you're looking for church home and god's brought you here and you believe that the lord wants you to be a part of what god's doing in this place we invite you to come as
