Hello, Bethel Church family.4:56This is Pastor Josh, lead pastor of Bethel. And I have the privilege and the joy of leading our worship gathering in corporate prayer.5:24Today we're going to pray for those who are suffering the effects, whether physical or spiritual, of COVID-19. This is something that actually is very personal to me because I am quarantined right now due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. And for everyone who's prayed, who has text-called, brought food over,5:48we are overwhelmed with Christian gratitude for you. Studies show that those who are part of a faith community actually recover quickly or quicker from illnesses. And scientists have wrestled, why is this the case? One thing they have pinpointed is the overwhelming support of the faith community for one another in times of difficulty. And I and my family want to say thank you for your overwhelming generosity.6:17So right now, let's go to the Lord on behalf of those who are ill, physically ill, who are isolated from this COVID-19 virus. I also believe there's a spiritual element. Something that the Lord has been using to water my heart today is from Proverbs 18, 14, which says, I believe there is a deeper spiritual element to all of this pandemic.6:43And it's those who are experiencing isolation, who are crushed in their spirit, maybe through fear and anxiety. So as we pray right now, we're going to pray for the physical elements of this pandemic, but also the spiritual implications because we know God will hear our prayer and we know that he will bring men and women into his presence.7:08So join me as we pray together this morning.7:38So join me as we pray together this morning. Father God, if it were not for your grace and your mercy,9:59but we would have nothing. It is through the sacrifice of your only Son, Jesus Christ,10:25that we have eternal life, that we are adopted into a new, beautiful family, that we have forgiveness of our sins, and that we have abundant life. Lord, for those that are suffering the effects of the coronavirus, COVID-19, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray that you would be the strength that they need right now in their moment.10:52We pray that you would lift their head and sustain them. Father, we know that a man's soul can endure sickness by your strength and by your deliverance. So, oh Lord God, you are the great physician. You are the great healer. And Lord, we ask that you would heal those in their infirmities. Father, we also know that there are many who are suffering from the effects of isolation,11:20depression, mental illness, and the darkness that is associated with the COVID-19 virus. Lord, if it were not for you, where would we be? We pray that those who are in darkness right now would see the light of Jesus Christ. Lord, we pray those who are isolated would understand that they are not alone because you are with them.11:46Lord, those who are sad that you would bring joy and that they would understand that mercy, your mercy, is made new every morning. Lord, we thank you for hearing our prayers. I thank you personally for the community of faith that has come to our aid in our moment of need. Lord, I thank you for the local church, which has been a joy to my soul and a balm in our need.12:15Lord, we thank you. We pray all these things in Jesus' name. And all of God's people said, Amen. I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene.12:35And wonder how He could love me, a sinner condemned unclean.12:55Singing how marvelous, how wonderful, how wonderful, and my song shall ever be. I will hold fast to the anchor. I will hold fast to the anchor.20:37Well, good morning. I'm Jared and I'm the worship pastor here at Bethel. And it is an absolute honor to be able to bring the word for us this morning. Today we're going to be in the book of James,21:06specifically chapter five. And if you would remember back with me some time ago, before we had to change all of our plans, we were, as a church, slowly walking through the book of James. Now next week, Lord willing, our pastor will be back with us. And he's actually going to be closing out our time in the book of Deuteronomy. But this morning, I thought that we would go back into James chapter five.21:34And I think that this is an incredibly fitting text for the season that we are all in right now. As today's sermon title is the meaning of waiting. Because right now, we are all in a season of waiting. Are we not? And we have been for some time. And waiting isn't easy. Can we agree?22:04How many times are we traveling with our families in the car and somebody asked, maybe it's our children, they ask, how much longer until we're there? Or they ask, are we there yet? This is why in our family, time out has become an effective punishment. There are times where our daughter, Presley, has not done the things that we've asked her to do. So we have had to graciously put her into a time of time out.22:30Now, what is time out? It is a time out of fun and putting her into a time of waiting. Because sometimes waiting is for our good. So this morning, we want to ask the question, how do we respond? How do we live? How do we glorify God in a season of waiting? Because we all know what it feels like to wait.23:00And just like my daughter in the car asked, how much longer? Do we go through seasons of life? Do we go through seasons of waiting, seasons of suffering, where we ask the question, how much longer? So as we look into the book of James, we want to remember a few things. Number one, we remember that James is the author. He is also the brother of Jesus. We see this in Matthew 13.23:29He's also the leader of the Jerusalem church. That's from Acts 15. And he's writing to Jewish Christians. And his main theme, the main theme throughout the entire book of James, is that he is urging his readers. He is urging believers, live out your faith. Be a doer of the word, not just a hearer. Because when we are in the midst of suffering, when we are in the midst of waiting,23:57we will see that it's also a time for us to be doing. That is our prayer today, that we would not only be hearers, but we would also be doing the things that God has called us to do. Would we be encouraged by this text? Would we be challenged? And would it remind us to put our trust into the faithfulness of God?24:23James chapter 5, starting in verse 7 through verse 11, it says this. And I invite you to follow along with me. James writes, Therefore, brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, and he is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.24:51You must also be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the Lord's coming is near. Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the door. Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as an example of suffering and patience. See, we count as blessed those who have endured.25:19For you have heard of Job's endurance, and you have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about. The Lord is compassionate and merciful. So we get to this part of the letter, and we plainly see that the main theme in this specific section of the text is the theme of patience. As James approaches this issue of waiting, we see that he mentions the word patience four times.25:46He also uses the word endurance twice. It is no secret that in our Christian lives, we will enter into a time of suffering. We will enter into a time of waiting. And it's in those times that the word tells us that we need patience and we need endurance. I remember a time in my own life when waiting was maybe the hardest thing to truly do.26:12It was a nine-month process of waiting, and I think a lot of us watching this morning are familiar with this process, and that is waiting through a pregnancy. I remember when we found out that my wife, Anna Claire, was pregnant with our daughter, Presley. We entered into a time of waiting. And as expectant parents, we were filled with excitement, we were filled with fear, and we were also filled with questions.26:43So we would go to doctor visits, and we, or I should say I, would ask the doctor hundreds of questions. And finally, our doctor looked at me, and she said, and she said, Jared, slow down, wait, and be patient. And I'll never forget when we got just a few weeks away from our due date.27:11We went to the doctor, and if I could just be honest with you this morning, I was ready to go, and I was sick of waiting. I wanted to be admitted to the hospital. I wanted to get the process started because I was ready for our daughter to be born. And the doctor looks at me again, and she says, Jared, slow down, wait, and be patient. The doctor reminded me that even in the last few weeks leading up to the birth of our daughter,27:40our child was still developing. She was still growing. And those last few weeks of waiting were actually completely necessary to the health and development of our daughter. And I think that we've all been here in our times of waiting where we feel like we've simply waited long enough. And on the outside, it seems like nothing is happening. At times, it hurts.28:10And we want to ask the question, when will this be over? And all the while, on the inside, God is at work in ways that we do not see. He's creating, and he's working for our good. And for us, he was working and creating for the good of a child we had not even met yet. So this is what we need to see today, and I pray that we see today, is that our waiting time is not a wasting time.28:38But I'm trusting through faith that God is working for my good and for his glory, even when we cannot see it. Even when we cannot see it. Slow down. Wait. And be patient. We see in verse 7, James begins by giving the analogy of a farmer. Now, if you know anything about me, you know that for the last four years of my life, I lived in Indiana.29:08And if you know anything about southern Indiana and the Midwest, you know that a lot of farming goes on there.29:33So much so that my backyard was a cornfield. I was friends with farmers, and they were members of our church, and we would dialogue back and forth. And there were a few things that I learned from this lifestyle of farming and seeing this lifestyle up close. Number one, it's hard. Number two, it takes time.30:02And number three, the results are simply not in your control. I remember talking to a good farming friend of mine, and to be honest with you, I was at a point in the season that I was ready for the corn to be harvested and picked up out of my backyard because I was tired of all the spiders making their way into the back of my kitchen. I'm pretty sure at one point, the spiders had taken our last name, moved in, and become a part of our family.30:28I was ready for them to go. So I was talking to my good friend who was in farming, and I asked him, can we go ahead and harvest this corn? Can we go ahead and pick it up? I want it out of my backyard. And this is where he explained to me that if you harvested the corn too early, you would get nothing in return. But you had to wait for the corn to move through the season.30:56And the length of that season varied from year to year. But if you waited long enough, while you were waiting, the corn was growing. And while you were waiting, things were happening underground that you did not see, that were completely necessary. You see, the process wasn't slow. The process was effective. So many times we feel like God is slow.31:24We're tempted to say, God, would you just hurry up? I've been in this job forever. I've been in this house forever. I've been in this season forever. Would you just hurry up? But listen, when we imply that something is slow, we imply that it is inefficient. We imply that it's not working the way it should. We imply that there must be a better way.31:52My friends, God is not slow. God is patient. His timing is not our timing. 2 Peter 3, 8 and 9 says, With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day. God is not slow. He is patient. And through my waiting, I am trusting that he is working for my good.32:17We also see James mention an aspect of farming here that is not only about waiting, but it's about waiting for a certain event, which is rain. Farmers not only wait for crops to grow, but in order for them to grow, they must wait for rain. So if you're watching this morning, and you're a little bit like me, that you are impatient,32:44that you may be a little bit of a control freak, the lifestyle of farming is not for you. It for certain is not for me. Because there are jobs in which we have control, and there are jobs like farming in which we simply do not have control. But what about our lives? Aren't there seasons of our lives where we feel like we have all control?33:11But we also go through seasons of life where we feel like we have lost all control. But what the word tells us, and what we need to realize, is that in every season, God is in complete control. The good and the bad, God is in control. He is patient, and he's working. What does Romans 8, 28 say? He says, we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.33:38Even what Satan means for evil, God is working for our good. And listen, here's the thing. It's in these times, in these seasons of waiting, in these times of suffering, these are the times that our theology matters most. These are the times when what we believe matters most.34:07Because what is theology? It is simply what you believe about God. And here's what the word tells us. This is what we believe. And it's good news for us today, is that God is not only in control, but he is really, really good. Because we can all agree that there are leaders in our world, there are leaders in our communities, there are leaders in our workplaces that are in control, but they aren't necessarily good.34:34But what we believe is that God is completely sovereign. He is completely in control. And he is completely good. Oh, church, would we cling to this truth in our times of suffering?35:00In your times of waiting and suffering, you can trust the king because he's good. Going on in this passage in verses 8 and 9, James writes, You must also be patient. Strengthen your hearts because the Lord's coming is near. Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another so that you will not be judged.35:28Look, the judge stands at the door. So what is James calling us to do here? He's calling us to strengthen our hearts. Another translation, if you have the ESV, he's calling us to establish our hearts. He says, don't complain about one another. Because there are circumstances in our times of waiting, in our times of suffering, there are circumstances that we cannot control.35:51But it seems that in this text, James is calling us to honor God with the things that we can control. Listen, you cannot control what happens around you. But you can control what happens inside of you.36:17Remember what we mentioned earlier, that our time of waiting is not a time of wasting. But in our times of waiting, our times that God is using to mold us into Christ's likeness. He's using to mold us into his image, to use us for the advance of his gospel. Now, church, would we not waste our times of waiting? Would we not waste our times of suffering? Would we not waste this time and this season that we are in right now?36:47But would we pray, God, would you use us for your glory? Would you use us to reach our community? Would you use us to reach our neighbors? My friends, your suffering is not meaningless. I love what David Platt says when he prays, in our times of waiting, would the gospel not stop with us, but would it spread through us?37:07Oh, church, would that be true of us today? James is calling us to establish our hearts. Establish your heart. Anchor it into his word. And trust that God is at work and he will show himself strong. A man named Jared Wilson, who is a professor and an author, he wrote this.37:37He says, if you can't see the light, cast another anchor into the dark. Would we anchor ourselves to the truth of God's word when everything around us is changing? When we don't know what tomorrow brings, would we anchor ourselves into the word of God that is always true and never changes? Now, this morning, if you're watching and you can't see the light, simply cast another anchor into the dark and trust that it will fall on a secure foundation through the word of God.38:05Moving to the end of this passage, in verse 10, James writes, The last thing we need to see today is that James is calling us to remember God's promise.38:30Now, this morning, we don't have a ton of time to walk through the entire book of Job.38:58But I do think it's interesting and incredibly fitting that James does point to Job. Because if you know anything about the book of Job, you know that we learn quickly in chapter one that Job is a God-fearing man of integrity. But then quickly, with the turn of just a few pages, we learn that this man, Job, has lost all of his possessions.39:21He's losing his family. And even his body started to give way. So then in response to his turmoil, in response to his suffering, Job says this in chapter one. Job chapter one. Job began to speak and he cursed the day he was born.39:47He said, may the day I was born perish. And the night that said a boy is conceived. If only that day had turned to darkness. May God not care about it and may God not shine light upon it. This is a man that suffering is so dark that he regrets the day that he was born. And what we want when we're reading the story, what we want, what we long for is we want to turn the page and we want to immediately see a happy ending.40:17But if you know anything about the book of Job is that you must start reading and then you must keep reading. Because it takes 42 long chapters to get to the end. My friends, our seasons of waiting and our seasons of suffering may be long. They may be much longer than we ever thought.40:46But I want us to see what Job says at the end of this long, long season of questions, waiting and suffering. At the end of this book, in chapter 42, Job says this. Job replies to the Lord and he says, I know that you can do anything and no plan of yours can be thwarted. You asked, who is this who conceals my counsel with ignorance?41:15Surely I spoke about things that I did not understand. Things too wondrous for me to know. You said, listen now and I will speak. And when I question you, you will inform me. And then in verse 5, Job says, I had heard reports about you, but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore, I reject my words and I am sorry for them, for I am dust and I am ashes.41:45This morning, would we fix our eyes on Christ? I think there's so many of you watching right now that for such a long time have had your eyes fixed on so many things. If you've had your eyes fixed on your problems, you've had your eyes fixed on your job or your career, you've had your eyes fixed on the past, you've had your eyes fixed on the future, you've had your eyes fixed on the news, the government, the virus.42:06And this morning, let me encourage you, fix your eyes on Christ, because when we see Jesus, everything changes. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, everything around us will look different. Because what did James say that we would see?42:36That the Lord is compassionate and merciful. And he has promised that he will show himself faithful. Would we remember that God is not slow? God has not forgotten. God has not made a mistake. But he is patient. He is sovereign. He is good. And he's working all things out for his glory.43:05So many times we struggle with the thought. I don't know about you, but this is me. We struggle with the thought. That if we just do more, we can climb our way out of any suffering. We can just climb our way out of any time of waiting if we just do more. So today, I'll just close with this analogy, because I think as Christians, we tend to think this way. Growing up, we would go to the circus.43:35Now, I never really liked the circus, but I would tag along. And I do remember that there was an event at the circus in which this man would stand, and he would have these long straw poles. And he would put this straw pole into the ground. Then he would take a plate. He would put the plate on top of the pole, and he would start to spin the plate. And then he would have one plate spinning. He would put another pole in the ground, and he would have a second plate spinning.44:05And then he would move and have a third plate spinning. And before you knew it, this man had 10 plates spinning in the air. Now, I will admit that I was never super impressed with this demonstration, but I do think that it lends itself for the sake of this analogy. I think as Christians, we tend to live our lives this way, that if we can just keep our plates spinning, then everything's going to be okay. We're so tempted to think, okay, I've got my Bible study going here, so I'm good.44:34Okay, I've got my church attendance right here, so I'm good. Okay, I've got my prayer time going. I've got my family time going. And we have all of these plates spinning, and we're so scared that one is going to drop. Church, let me encourage you today, let the plates drop. Let the plates drop, and fix your eyes on Christ, and trust that he is doing the work.44:57And remember that there is coming a day that he will make all things new. And like Paul said, we can say, for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Because Christian, this world is the closest to hell as you are ever going to get. Trust in what Jesus has done for you, and believe that even now, in this moment, he is working in you, and he is working for you.45:27Today, before we enter into a response time of worship, I believe that there are so many that are watching today that are believers, but maybe you have not fixed your eyes on Christ in such a long time, that you have had your eyes fixed on so many things. You've got your plates spinning.45:59Now, today, I encourage you, let those plates drop, and come and fix your eyes on the Savior. And remember that you can trust the King, because he's good. And maybe there's some watching today, and I know that there is, that you've never fixed your eyes on Christ. My hope and prayer is that you would be like Job, where he says, I have heard about you, but now my eyes have seen you.46:27There are some watching right now that you have heard about God, that you have heard about the man upstairs. Oh, let me urge you to see that God is not the man upstairs, but he is a God that loves you so much that he sent his son, Jesus, to die on a cross for you and to be your Savior. And today, if you want to fix your eyes on Christ for the very first time, you can simply pray a prayer like this.46:57Oh, God, I know that I am a sinner, and I know that you are a great Savior. I believe that you sent your son, Jesus, to die on a cross in my place. So today, I repent of my sins, and I put my faith in you as my Savior. I turn my eyes to you, and now I want to live my life, all of my days, for your glory.47:25You can pray a prayer like that. And if that is you that prayed that prayer, oh, today, would you know that you can go from death to life, that our God is not the man upstairs, but he is a God that loves you, and he's working in you and working for you, and he is really, really good. Now, church, would we trust the King together, and remember that when we fixed our eyes on Christ, the things of this earth will grow strangely dim.47:52And our God is good, and we can trust him. Let me pray for us now as we enter into a time of response. Oh, God, we know that you are good, and we know that we can trust you. We know that you are completely sovereign.48:21You are completely in control. We thank you that you are a patient God. You are not slow, but all things are working according to your purpose. So, God, we trust in that. Today, this morning, in this moment, in the middle of our living rooms, we fix our eyes on you. God, would you work in our hearts? Would you work in our lives?48:50You are our creator, and we trust you. So, God, now we worship you for all of those things that you are to us. We thank you for Jesus, our Savior, and we fix our eyes on him together. And we pray this in Jesus' perfect name. Amen. Amen. Now, we invite you. Would you sing with us for the glory of God?49:23Are you hurting and broken within? Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin? Jesus is calling. Have you come to the end of yourself? Do you thirst for a drink from the well?49:49Jesus is calling. Oh, come to the altar. The Father's arms are open wide.
