His Name Shall Be

  First, the sword cuts through Mary's expectations of family and control. Think about what Christ said in Mark 3. There's a large crowd because he's healing people and he's teaching and Mary and the brothers are outside. And someone tells Jesus, Jesus, your family is outside. They're waiting for you. And in Mark 3, verse 3, Jesus says this.

  And in Mark 3, verse 3, Jesus says this. Who is my mother? And who are my brothers? Can you imagine hearing that if you're Mary? This must have been a piercing thought for her. Has Jesus disowned her? No. The child she nurtures belongs firstly entirely to his father's mission. The gospel will require Mary to loosen her grip on Christ, to love without possession, to trust without explanation.

  There was one person that said, "Okay, game on." What I find fascinating about this is, the normal reaction to Jesus Christ from demonic forces is a cry. You have in Mark 3:11 and Matthew 8:29, usually when demons encounter Jesus, shriek. Which is a reminder for me, the presence of Jesus Christ makes Satan nervous. There's never a time where Satan sees Jesus and feels like he has a chance.

And a storm rolls up and the disciples woke him and they said, Teacher, don't you care that we drown?

What is Church?

  When Jesus saw a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, he said to the man, stretch out your hand. And the man's hand was restored whole. In Mark 3, verse 5. Jesus walks up to this man on a day where he's supposed to be resting. And Jesus says, dude, stretch out your hand. Now, isn't that not a strange question for someone to ask a man that has his shriveled hands? But the Son of God has power that the world has never seen.
