Verse 1, chapter 1 says, Some of you might think that that sounds familiar because in the book of Judges, chapter 13, when the Bible introduces Samson, you know, the mighty, strong warrior, it began the same way. So anytime God raises up a hero for the people to deliver them, it began in the book of Judges, there was a man. And this man's name was Elkanah. And the preserved genealogy hints at his status.

What a horrific way to lose your vision. But there's more than meets the eye here. Because from the very beginning, we know that Samson lived in a time where people did what was right in their own eyes. The Bible says it like this in Judges 13.1. The people did evil in the Lord's eyes or his sight.

And he died to make us right, because one day Jesus will put everything together again. That is the hope that we have. So let's read Judges chapter 13, not the whole chapter, I promise. And then we're going to go to the Lord to ask him to open our hearts and our minds. Judges 13, 3 through 5. Judges is in the Old Testament, after Joshua, before Ruth. Judges 13, verse 3, I'm reading from the CSB, that's the Christian Standard Bible.
