  And for 400 plus years, God's people sat in silence. From Matthew 1, 1 to Malachi 4, verse 6. This little page represents 450 years of silence. No fresh word from the Lord.

  …to fill in the blank. So we looked at Christmas being a broken curse. Last week, we looked at we remind ourselves that Christmas is a fulfilled promise. And today we're going to center our gaze upon the word of God in Matthew chapter one. Really, one verse.

  And some of you will notice that Emmanuel is spelled with an E. And so you ask, well, which is correct? This is why I love Hebrew because both are correct. So in ancient phonetics, it could be spelled with an E or an I. So do not let your hearts be troubled, my English majors. Trust in God. It could be I or E. Matthew chapter one today. They will call him Emmanuel. These are weighty words indeed.

Christmas is...

  There are no invisible promises of the word. What God says, he will always do. What God said, he will always do. And the only thing empty about faith in Jesus Christ is the empty tomb. So today we look at Christmas, a promise fulfilled. Let us read the word, Matthew chapter 1. Matthew is the first book in the New Testament. And then we will read, we will pray and ask God's blessing upon the reading of his word in our gathering.

  You see, sin is a story of us without God. So when we read in Matthew chapter 1, that a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son and they will name him Emmanuel, which is a translated God with us. The darkness of our spiritual lives finally heard a beautiful word. This is no ordinary child, church.

  But what we see through their stories, Naomi, Ruth, Boaz, their stories formed part of God's much bigger plan for the rest of the world. That as this list of names ends with David, there is another list of names coming in Matthew chapter 1 that would end with Jesus Christ, who would be the redeemer of the world. So if you'll notice with me in this list of names, this genealogy is a ten-name, ten-person list.

  In Matthew chapter 1, we get another list of names. That starts with Abraham. To Isaac. To Jacob. To Ruth. To David. And then generations down the road, it leads to Bethlehem. Where Jacob would father Joseph, the husband of Mary. Who would give birth to Jesus, the Messiah. Church, don't miss it. Every promise made finds its keeping in Jesus Christ. Every promise made from Abraham to David is now fulfilled in Jesus.

The Name

  They will call him Jesus because, Matthew says, he will save the people from their sins. Which means you can't tell the Christmas story without talking about sin. Because why would Jesus come save someone from sin if they ain't got none? So, the curse and sin is part of the Christmas story. That's why we need a Savior. And today, we are going to look at Matthew chapter 1. Jesus, the son of David. Jesus, the son of Abraham.

  Jesus, the son of Abraham. So, join me in Matthew 1. In your Bibles, when you find there, you're going to think, oh no. Matthew 1.1, is pastor really going to read 14 generations plus 14 generations plus 14 generations? Not today. Not today. Matthew 1, beginning in verse 1. Let's set the stage.

Miracle in the Manger

  …is only found in Jesus Christ. This is the power of the gospel. And today we continue our message, Miracle in the Manger. And we're going to look at the incarnation, God with us. So as we begin that, you can turn to Matthew chapter 1 if you have your Bibles. We're going to look at one verse today, one verse. For many of you, and myself too, the sounds of Christmas bring the greatest joy to your hearts.

  But before we do, here's our incarnation. It is God. Fully God. Becoming man. Fully man. So it's the union of God and man. The incarnation. God becoming flesh for us. It's exactly what we see in Matthew chapter 1 and verse 23. So as we worship in light of the virgin birth last week, today we worship in light of the incarnation.
