His Name Shall Be

  Join me now in Golgotha in Jerusalem in John chapter 19. Verse 33 and 34. The sword that Simeon placed in Mary's future is not metaphorical. It's not a literary retelling of the gospel. It's a literal, historical piercing. It becomes iron lifted by a Roman soldier on a hill outside of Jerusalem.

  John 19, the disciple, the beloved disciple, the Bible calls him, writes it this way. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. That is, they whipped him on his back with whips that would have some type of animal bone at the end of the whip. The soldiers also twisted a crown of thorns, put it on his head and clothed him in a purple robe. And they kept coming up to him saying, Hail, King of the Jews.

  You see, the crown that the world gave Jesus meant to disgrace him. But in God's hands, that crown of thorns was something more beautiful and radically different. You see, the crown of thorns pointed us to something in the future. Now, listen to how John, the writer of John 19, describes it at the end when he sees Jesus coming on the clouds. Now, keep in your mind the crown of thorns. John, the same writer, says,

  we want to be used of God so that they would joyfully submit to the Lord. Mom, Dad, you are the chief repentance officer in the home. Be reflective, not reactive. Lastly, another R. Your child needs a relentless parent. A relentless parent. Not found necessarily in Luke 2, but found in John 19. There's one more aspect of Jesus' life I need to share. John 19:25 says this,

  John 19:25 says this, The standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple that he loved standing there, he said to his mother, Listen, here is your son. And he said to his disciple, here is your mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her into his home.

  The cry was inarticulate in Mark. But John, the beloved disciple, tells us in John 19 what this cry was. It was one word in Greek. Tetelestai. John says that Jesus, when he cried out in the loud voice, said, It is finished. This was the cry. So we ask, what is finished? Jesus was not crying as if to say,

  Well, you can turn to John 19 and they're found again upset. Because they wanted the title of Jesus to say, he says he is king of the Jews. And Pilate said, what I have written, I have written. He is king of the Jews. And in this moment, these wise men became worshipers. And Jesus upon the cross, as our great high priest, did not offer incense on your behalf.
