  Jesus tells us that. He says, this is love. And there is no greater love than this, that a man would lay down his life for another. Does that sound familiar? No, the Bible says that God did that for us. The God who is love, 1 John 4, 8, has shown his love by sending his one and only son to die for you. To die for me. So if you ask me, well, pastor, I'm a visual person. I need to see love to believe love and to understand love.

  Because of the gospel, our love now has shape. 1 John 4, 19. 1 John 4, 18 says God is love. 1 John 4, 19 then says we love because God first loved us. And his commands define our love. And we will see shortly. So to love someone is to do what God commands towards them and to help them obey God's word for their life.

You see, sacrifice is the normative language for the Christian. And again, 1 John 4:10 says love consists in this.
